I'm in Folsom (Sacramento area) supposedly the emergency spillway was predicted to fail at 6pm Sunday and mandatory evacuations started. Nothing for the Sacramento area. Spillway(s) are badly eroding but haven't failed completely yet.
Thay are now preparing to drop large rocks and bolders with helicopters on the eroded areas to by more time.
Rioting/ burning things seems to be the new way to show people your upset about something
Crazy to see the pictures from 2014-16 drought and now its full.
From what I can tell they are trying to walk the fine line between too much release of water and damaging downstream, and too little and not having the capacity ready for the coming storm.

Here is a drone video from yesterday.

Those pictures are of the emergency spillway which is nothing more than a dirt hill and was only meant to be used in extreme circumstances... The normal spillway developed the large hole in the middle of the concrete that you see in the pics. 2 different spillways, same dam.
Mandatory evacuations have been lifted.
Reports are now out that this problem has been known about since at least 2005. Local government, California governor and the bush administration didn't want to spend any money to correct it. Seems some are out for blood now looking for the ones responsible.
It is also raising the question of how many other dams or large structures have major issues the have been ignored by our government and responsible parties.
A full scale investigation will likely start soon
