My 2009 goal is to have the fastest stock-turbo Dmax (#2 only).
Looks like NODMAX (Eric) and I will be competing, too. This could get fun.

To that end, I need some parameters set as to what I can do to the truck to keep it "legal". I dont want anyone coming back and saying "Blah blah blah, he had a different wastegate on it, so the time doesnt count".

Ideas for upgrades include:

Removing PPE boost valve and installing BigHead-type wastegate. (Does anyone sell an adjustable wastegate besides Banks?)
BD manifold
fuel pump pickup
rollpan
pinion snubber (BTW, I plan on working on that after Christmas....I've been too damn busy at work and weekends are full. Sorry to anyone whos been waiting on me.)
caltracs
driveshaft loops
Toyos (Jeff, you still have them?)
JohnBoy-modded motormounts
Asking Nick to tweak the tune a bit more if he can

Just would like opinions. Also, if anyone has any ideas what could help, I'll listen. I figure I have to run a ~12.14 or so to get it.
it is your truck but i would not do the caltracs.just clamp the front of the springs and go to rancho 9000s.better than caltracs.

I'd put an elocker in if you don't already have one. It will help take care of bad track prep and definately help when truck pulling.

Ya know...I've been meaning to ask what everyone means by "track prep"??? Do you mean how many times they spray VHT on the start area, or how much rubber is left on the track?

Too much traction breaks stuff. I'd just like a little chirp at start without any wheelhop...not the "all-hell-breaks-loose" tire-screeching starts like last year.

Cool. Thanks.

When you run at a track that hasn't been prepped, you'll know. Wheelhop, spinning into second, etc. When the Hondazuki in front of you that runs 16's does a burnout in the waterbox for 30 seconds, and drags water all down the track, you'll find out. :D

Kat cut 1.6x's on Toyo Proxies at a good track, but can't do that at our local tracks due to poor prep.

I have a few of the mods you might do and im pretty happy with it, my Ally just aint up to the chalenge yet:D Oh and im 2wd! I didnt bother with a wastegate, i just made my own boost controller and it works like a champ! I help Daniel(2500HeavyDuty) make one too and IIRC he was pretty happy too! Spools up faster and runs right where i set it, inside the cab too! runnin 32psi on mine. I modded m own CP3 and regulator. A lift pump might be a good idea for you, with the injectors, i need it. Its an interesting challenge, i like it! Right up my alley as im pushin my stock crap pretty hard:D
Interesting idea. An remotely controlled adjustable orifice inline of the stock wastegate?

Front clamps are all I do now. The snubber idea is going to be the primary thing I try next spring. Caltracs are a fall-back if nothing else works.
Mike also told me that running the rancho shocks are a big improvement over the bilsteins at the track, so I'll have to look into those.

Thanks. Elocker would be nice, but would probably put me overbudget. As it is, I think the sled pulling is all done. Maybe just Eric's and Eagle.

Ok fellas, for you guys interested in my boost controller mod, heres the link to my lil tutorial i did a while back! Sorry i dont have more pictures for ya! But if you need any clarification on anything, just ask me and i'll do my best to help! Oh and i use thoes real nice push-loc fittings with the nylon plastic hard line but you can use what ever you prefer. I kinda like this stuff myself, its strong, impervious to most things, clean, and you can hook and un hook as much as you like!

Tom I would agree with Pat about the cp3 from his point of view. It's a stock duramax part just off another year so you wouldn't be modifying anything to say. Something tells me you just might reach your goal as I remember when your quest for 12.50's was not long ago and I told ya good luck then you blew past that with a 12.40 the next time you went to the track. Make me wish I kept around the old lb7 of mine sometimes:D.

Thanks Steve. This year, the truck was dropping time so fast, I didnt know what the heck was going on. Its awful tough to track just what mod did what to improve the setup. Next year will be much tougher.

If a modded CP3 such as the Wicked stroker unit counts as stock because it's modified from stock parts than the Cheetah turbos are stock as well. I would say that an LBZ CP3 fit the description of "stock". Not saying not to do a modded CP3 though. I think in the quest to have the "fastest stock motor/turbo" truck you will never keep everyone happy - just build it how you want and be proud of how it does for the mods you have.

Some of the other parts that are typically not restricted are things like headers and up-pipes, tires, gears and lockers, and injectors.

Raceline wheels are really light and pretty cheap - perfect for a budget race setup. They just don't have the biggest selection of backspacing choices. Then you can expand your tire choices. I'm running the 28 x 11.5 MT ET Street cheater slicks and they are doing good so far.

See, thats the thing, Dustin....I'm one of those guys who thinks that a modded CP3 is pushing "stock", and any kind of injector or turbo other than stock isnt "stock". Id have a hard time justifying any attempt with those items installed.

You are right, though. Build it the way I "see" it, and have fun with it. I do love all the suggestions and have appreciated everyone's input. They are all being considered, and we'll see where this all goes in 2009. I'm very glad that I can talk about this whole idea with other people who have far more experience than I, without being "abused" for the whole idea.

On edit, I have to admit that 2008 was the most fun I ever had at the track. Every single time I went, something new and very cool would happen. Hoping 2009 is just as fun. It most certainly will be tougher.
That old '83 Mustang I used to run only actually did a 13.73 (I finally found the slip), and I used to think that was one really fast car. Hell, I've left that car in the dust with this truck already, AND I drive this truck every day. Un-freakin-real.

Everyone bases the "rules" for a truck to be stock on what they had done to their truck when it ran a "good" time. In that case I would say that the trucks competing for fastest stock LBZ have to have a stock intake and down-pipe and be on normal truck street tires. But in reality I think that any stock CP3 (out of any duramax - even if that means swapped in), stock injectors, #2 only, and stock turbo from that engine model (the '04 LB7 turbo could be swapped on any LB7) are about all that should be restricted. Opening the exhaust, intake or charge air passages by any means is fine - you can't say headers aren't allow but BD manifold is, or that exhaust is ok but down-pipe isn't. Set-up your truck's suspension the way you want and run the tires you want; reducing weight by unbolting things is fine, swiss cheesing the frame and using fiberglass everywhere is beyond normal.

Thanks Dustin. Your trucks are very impressive themselves.

Thats kind of the same thing that Merchant tells me. I just took all the info I've learned from everyone else and applied it. I guess its working.

I dont play the lottery, but I do have money in the stock market. Same thing.
