Stewie,

Find a local web hosting service, it should only be 10-50 bucks depending on size of the site and forget about it. Been down that road already...

Low bandwidth...

what are the computers specs? What operating system are they running? Windows NT or XP Pro would be the way to go unless you are fimiliar with the Linux platform. With a little reading you should have no problem handling it yourself. Rob (Poltergeist) might be able to help he runs this site from a computer at his house.

You probably could in that case, I was thinking for a big web site where you have to have back up redundancies and what not...

computer has 200gb (?, could be wrong but it's large enough) hard drive 3 gigs ddr2, amd chip at i dunno what speed....It's a 64 bit dual core chip... in my opinion should work.... but i am clueless. Running on Windows XP pro at the moment. I have vista but not using it....

i am continuing to ask around and looking at options.

Basicly want it to host a website.... i may just sell it and continue doing what i'm doing.

i started with godaddy then went to something else (1and1.com) then wanted to run vbulletin with the 1and1 and i find out i need to have an upgraded host which puts us at $50 a month to host a nice forum for the club... not practical...

so i was hoping there was a way around it with a different computer and internet connection... I have 3 diferent pieced out comps laying around, about to have a 4th (complete) so i need to find a way to use these...

To run vBulletin you will need a Linux OS, we use CentOS on our server (you can download it for free). vBulletin will run on a Windows box but some things just don't work correctly. Been there done that with this site in the early days. Godaddy was surprised that I was able to get it to run at all, just the kinda guy I am, :D

Also these:

Minimum System Requirements
A webserver with PHP 4.3.3 and MySQL 4.0.16 installed

Recommended System Requirements
PHP 4.4.2 or 5.1.2 or later
MySQL 5.0.19 or later.

You could run a server from home if you wanted. Get a good DSL connection and pay for a permanent IP address and run it that way. Speed won't be the greatest but for 50 or so users it will work. An El Camino site that I'm a member of uses a DSL connection in the owners Auto Repair shop, again speed is not the greatest but we deal with it.
