Look at the bell housing pattern? Exhaust manifolds, intake manifolds, etc...

I think the distributers spin opposite ways too.

If its in a truck theres a pretty good chance its not a BOP engine.

Also look to see if the engine is painted a specific color.

Buick has a front distributor and 454 valve covers look different than the others . Olds the heads have a distinct shape as well . Water pump timing cover heads or different on the Pontiac as well .

Heads and valve covers are the easiest way to tell the difference. Just google BBC 454, Olds 455, Pontiac 455, and Buick 455, and you will find hundreds of thousands of pictures to see the differences.

Cool. Im pretty sure that the BOP engines seems like the where the headers/manifolds bolt up it looks to be "dropped" in that area right? Thats what I was trying to get at.

And yes I am asking this question because I have a 8.1L CHEVY motor....not a BOP. Smartass ;)

I actually went to see it and it was a SBC! Damn guy didnt know crap. Drove 2 hours away for nothing. Said it was a Th400 and it was a Th350 said it was a 455ci and it was SBC. Oh well. Thats what I get for looking on Shitlist. Thanks anyways though guys. Going to look at some 454s this week but have sticks. Plowing with a stick is not really what I want but we will see. Finding a Th400 with a NP205 and BBC is really hard to find. I looked years ago when I had a 79 and couldnt find shit OEM. AM is too expensive.

The Buick 455 is stamped where the top of the block dips down in the back just below the intake manifold by where the bellhousing is. The Olds is stamped usually on the side of the block by the freeze plugs, the Pontiac is way harder as they really used the same size block for the 350,400 and 455. They have some stamped on the Driverside of the block toward the middle. As far as finding a BBC how many do you want? They are fairly easy to come buy around here. I have a good friend with a 468 we just put a bigger cam in for sale as well. I love the ones who can't tell you what they have but seem to think they know. if you need one let me know i can find you something around here.

Nothing wrong with the 4L80s. I had a Th400 built and it was unreal. All for just $325 too! Doubt that would happen on a 4L80. Just wanted the older body style truck really. I used to have one and miss the hell out of it. I want a solid axle also. Want a BBC for the power as it may occasionally pull the work trailer. I seem to find some around here but they either are a POS or they are over priced. Im not looking for a show truck but rather a nice decent truck. Doesnt have to have matching paint or anything. Just dont want the typical rust buckets you find in Ohio. Pretty bad watching the pavement fly by in between your legs as your driving down the road. Im surprised some of these people dont get their legs caught in the front driveshaft!

How are the 4 sp manuals in these K20-K30s? Other than 5' between gears?

Id take Larry up on his offer.

BBC/TH400 was a great combo way back when. BB Chevelles....Novas....Monte Carlos.....ah, the good old days. Man, you got me all wistful. :)

But isnt it great that we all lived long enough to see the new Muscle Wars with these diesels? :thumb:

Tom that would cost me a fortune to ship a truck from Texas to here! Lol. I would love to take him up on it though. Maybe I can get Johnny to stop down there and pick one up and bring it on out since he keeps saying hes gonna come out here. Highly doubtful though.

Tom your in MI arent ya? Was up there couple weeks ago.
