6.5 guy... I still build them every day... I'm an old school mechanic of 35 years... have a 6.5 in my el camino and one in my 64 c10. But needed a good reliable everyday truck to tow with occasionally. So, I bought a 07 2500HD classic. Has a K&N cold air on it. Looks like stock exhaust... other than that, I haven't yet dug into it to see what has been done to it.

Going to have some questions...

Well first off, your new LBZ is going to feel like a rocket compared to your 6.5:thumb:
Thats an understatement. My stock LB7 felt like a rocket in my BURB compared to my 6.5 when it had a chip, intake, axhaust, fuel resistor mod, and optic bump done to it. And my 6.5 had 4.10 gears compared to the 3.42's I put in it with the DURAMAX.

I'll agree my duramax's would run circles around my 6.5 and turbo 6.2. However my 6.5 was never near the money pit these trucks are. I do want a 6.5 again though. Anyway welcome

Parts fro the DMAX do cost more, but so far my LB7 has cost me ALOT less than my 6.5 did. With the DURAMAX I hit the key, fire her up, and drive it, with the 6.5 it was always something needing worked on.

I could see that my 6.5 never gave me any trouble til the head gaskets popped. But it was a mechanically injected one.

Mine was problem after problem after problem, then the head gaskets went and I had had enough. Parked it and was buying parts to do a CUMMINS/ALLISON swap, went to the store and got stuck between a 12 valve and a 24 valve, one on each side with my windows down, and PROMPTLY backed out and found a DURAMAX donor. After I really dug i nand found out the swap wasn't as hard to do as most made ito ut to be, my mind was made up, and here it is.

My dad had one. A 93. Damn thing had 260k on it and the original trans finally gave out. Most he did was change the oil pressure sensor, glow plugs, and other little stuff. Damn the turning radius sucked ass in it though

OK, enough of the 6.5 talk. No way do "6.5" and "performance" belong in the same sentence. Its like a disease. :hehe:

My 6.5 was never fast, but it was not as slow as alot of the smoke screw cummins around here. Mainly probably because my Chevy was not as heavy as the dodges. Beaters are a addiction

Hey it's like messing with a Suzuki samurai 1.3 and adding "performance parts" to it. It ain't no rocket but it's fun to see what you can crank out of them! Lmao

Sawsall,
welcome to the site with the highest content to static ratio you will find. As others have mentioned, the 6.6 is in a completely different league than the old 6.5

Hey now. :(

I have a deep appreciation for both the 6.5 and 6.6 for what they were intended to accomplish. I actually get a little nostalgic and melancholy when I think about the Tahoe.

Then I just go for a ride in the Duramax and I always feel much better. :woott: :D

Each one has their own place I think. I love modern diesel trucks and the technology that is evolving with them. I am in no way a "doomsday prepper" but it is nice having my old mechanical 6.2 blazer around if the feces ever hits the air circulating device.

Thanks for the welcome...

comparing old 6.5 to new 6.6 is apples to oranges... I like both, but not the same...

my 6.5 Turbo in my 83 El Camino with built 700R4 and 2.42 gears is fun to drive:) way more engine than it needs and gets 26 MPG... 1200 RPM at 60 MPH in 4th with converter locked... I've had the speedo pegged at 120 MPH and it wanted to keep climbing... I backed off before it did. :woott:

Going to do some mild mods in the future to the Max... It already has a K&N cold air and EGR block off. I need to reroute PVC. and one day a 4" exhaust... Not going wild, it must still be a work truck
