I dont believe that $300 is overpaying for a short block.

Bottom line, unless you plan on pulling the motor back out and scrapping it because there was something wrong with it but you decided to install an unknown motor in a vehicle with a junk ass turbo and run the piss out of it. Then dont build the motor or even bother pulling the heads.

I want a 100k mile engine and only plan on putting it in once. Its being built to handle 12-15 psi with a good turbo as a dd. I am putting the money where it needs to go. The fact that I am punching it out to accept the LS1 piston did add some extra cost but thats what I wanted.

Will a stock motor handle 500-1000 hp on boost? Maybe, but for how long. My engine will handle 700+ hp at the crank while still making power past 7k rpm.

Buying a used motor and not going through it is just foolish. Too many variables to gamble with for me.

Ben - I do not feel I over paid for the 6.0, I resold the bare block for $275.

Are the 1/2 ton front ends, transfer cases, and rear ends tough enough or do you have to build them?

The 10 bolt rears do okay if you put in a aftermarket LSD in but on huge power they need to go to the 14 bolt 6 lug rears. The front ends are good and the transfer cases are okay as well. If going to the 80E some internals have to be changed to accept the 80E.

If I'm reading this right you are working on a LS engine? If its a 5.3 or 4.8, only differences is the dish pistons(4.8) or flat top pistons(5.3), I would just turn that sucker into a 383 stroker. :D

Crank, rod and piston are different. 4.8- short stroke crank, longer rods 6.275" & flat top pistons. 5.3- longer stroke, short rods and dish pistons. With a stroker you have high compression, this is being built to run a good amount of boost.

bumping an older thread here because of the 4.8 talk.

Is the 4.8 a good reliable motor in stock form.

van shopping:(

Yes, all the LSx engines are bulletproof. 4.8 will probably be a little wound out trying to push a heavy van around, but it will take a lickin' and keep tickin'.

yeah i could LSx my malibu wagon and my 75 K20 for less then swapping a dmax into either... but getting 40mpg+ out of the bu and ~20mpg out of my 75 pluss how easy it was to repower my 99 C3500HD i will sit and wait..
for less then 400.00 i can get a stand alone dmax harness ready to run for either manual, th400, 4L85E, allison, including buying the harness and then theres the WOW factor :D

it cost me 750.00 to have the 06 harness blended with the 99 harness

i average 20mpg with a carbed 468BBC running 70mph
current drivetrain setup is 2200rpm @ 70mph in 5th gear or 1500 in 6th gear with 3.08 and 26" tires and the car weighs 4000lb

mike woods mustange avg 38mpg while drag racing on hotrod drag tour.... im pretty sure i can do at least that if not better on a DD/weekend warrior

I started my transport company (full time, really started with a 4.3 auto) with a 4.8 5 speed. Try hauling a 6500 hundred pound boat with two motorcycles in the bed from Groton CT to San Diego CA. Many a times 3rd gear @ 4800 rpms to rev limiter. Motor was great! Never burned any oil but it would have killed an auto tranny. I believe the engine would not be a problem in the van. P.S. I blew the tranny in the 4.3 twice

Im building a 91 camaro with a ebay turbo'd LQ4 that I bought for $300 with 250,000 miles on it. Putting a junkyard 4l80e behind it that I picked up for $125. Shooting for 550hp on pump. Like ben was saying, the entire driveline will end up costing less than a good torque convertor for my Allison.
