OK, really stupid question about driveline phasing

Working on the little truck and got a problem. I know the trans output and pinion angles are supposed to be equal up-and-down so the u-joints are in phase in that plane, but what about side-to-side? Are the trans and pinion supposed to be in-line or offset slightly?

I have the trans x-member set the correct way (U-shaped "handle" facing forward), but the trans is offset of the pinion to the pass side of the truck. I can reverse the x-member so it's technically mounted "backward", and that would bring the trans back in line.

Im pretty sure I know the answer (trans and pinion should be lined up), but I wanted to ask first. This'll impact my pass side engine mount and how the oil pan clears, too.

Just make sure the engine and Trans are square in the frame. They may be off set one way or the other but key is making sure it's square. (Being off set is not the same as square if you know what I mean)

As for the pinion being off set, it's ok. They generally have a little off set. The more off set between the pinion and Trans out put, the more on point the pinion angle must be.

Keep in mind that during acceleration, downshifting and braking the pinion angle will not be constant (unless the rear axle has ladder bars) and will move up and down as a result of torque. Also changes as weight is added and the suspension moves.
