LB7: Oil Pressure Gauge/Sending Unit

Hello,

I have a 2001 LB7 with 208k miles on it. It started having problems with oil pressure gauge on the cluster boucing all over the place, being twitchy, working correctly one minute and then dropping to zero and then seconds later it twitches to a different spot. I figured it was a just a gauge problem since the DIC wasn't telling me that I had low oil pressure. Then after a few weeks of that, the DIC started randomly giving me "check oil pressure" warnings; it would flash on and off randomly like it was shorting out. I checked the dipstick and it had the correct level of oil in the truck and the truck is running just fine.

I had the computer checked for codes and none of them were related to oil pressure. I replaced the oil pressure sending unit and the DIC hasn't shown "check oil pressure" since. But now the gauge doesn't seem to be working at all anymore. I'm sure the stepper motor is bad on cluster (anyone agree???). My question is, does anyone know where to get stepper motors for a 2001 Chevy Cluster? They're different than the ones sold on Ebay and I can't seem to find any.

Thanks!

What does your scanner show for oil pressure?

Scanner will do him no good for an 01 as the ECm doesn't monitor oil pressure on them. It's a 1 wire sender that goes straight to the cluster.

Your not going to find a stepper because it doesn't use steppers. It uses resistive type actuators in them. And did you use a GM or AC delco sender? If not theres a good chance you got a bad sender. Have you tried grounding the gauge wire to see if the needle moves?

I missed the 01 part. Sorry. I'd either swap a known good cluster in there to make sure or be checking pressure manually just to make sure.

No oil pressure worries me.

Ok, first off, I do not have a scanner... :( What I meant was that I had a parts store check the ECM for codes. I did purchase an AC Delco sender.

So based on your suggestions, I should 1) ground the gauge wire to see if the needle moves (how do I know which one is the gauge wire?) 2) get a different cluster (seem hard to come by, and are known to have lots of issues it seems) 3) check oil pressure manually (I'm assuming you mean installing a mechanical gauge.)

Can someone tell me what the best way to install a Mechanical gauge is? Putting the sending unit in was pretty difficult to get to. there is barely any room in there to turn a wrench and all I had that would fit was an adjustable wrench that I could turn only about 1/8 turn at a time.

Ground the wire that hooks to the sender and see if the gauge pegs over. 01 clusters do not have alot of issues, its actually not often you see one with problems in the cluster. 03-05 were the bad ones for going out as they used steppers. The place I buy my steppers from actually quit selling the older style because they so rarely.
