Oil pressure at idle

Recently my oil pressure, when up to temp, is lower than normal. Used to see between 20-40 but now it sits on 20. Pressure is still normal when driving 60 or so at 70-75mph. I don't remember the weight of oil when I change last could have been 5/40 and not 15/40. Any other things I can check or look for?

sounds normal. My lb7 would idle with 18-20 psi showin on the guage. always seemed low to me but others said that that was normal. it is summer, the added hgeat can make fluid a little thinner, maybe showing less resistance

yeah that is what I was thinking but it has slowly dropped in the 5 years I have had it. Drove it today and had over 60 psi on the freeway...just assuming its the heat and oil the shop used. I will have it changed this weekend.

I had the same problem and started using the Rotella T 5w-40 full synthetic. I bought up the idle oil pressure when the engine was warmed up.

I have noticed the same thing since I bought my truck. I switched to Mobil delvac 5/40. I then switched to Schaeffers synthetic 9000 and pressure was still lower than 15/40 but I've never been worried about it.
Now I switched to Citgo synthetic 5/40 which is also formulated for our newer trucks and my oil pressure has come up at idle. Not a fluke. :D Might want to give it a try.

I was under the impression that the new oil, isnt good for modified truck. It doesnt have the proper amounts of zinc in it. Im no oil guy or anything like that, but thats just what I've picked up from other oil guys and Zach Hamilton. I dont know if there is any validity to any of this, but the new oils are emissons compliant and that usually doesnt mean anything good for anyone except the greenies. Maybe somthing to look into.

I looked into it and didn't like my findings...now there is tractor oil in the Dmax.

I have also been told that newer oils omit much of the zinc content that used to be in our oil. It is apparently harder to find the 'good' stuff now... I was told the Rotella with a 'red' stamp on it (something on the back label i believe) is what my engine builder on the quad says i have to run. I know a quad is not the same thing, but it is across the board with all oils that the zinc has been reduced or removed. Don't even remember what he said the zinc does overall for the lubrication process - but it apparently serves a very specific purpose, and not having it will be detrimental going forward.

He has built a few motors for me and my family over the years - and he told me if i run oil without the zinc, he won't back up the work because of clearances and power levels, etc we're running on this bike.

Just food for thoguht. hopefully someone here has the REASON why we need it though..

You dont want oil that is CJ-4, that is what is the low zinc level stuff approved for 07 emissions motors. CI-4 oil is good to go though.

Zinc is an anti-wear additive. But I cant go any further in depth than that. I've researched it a little bit since I first heard about this and learned a little, but not enough to answer what else it does. I just know we need it. And new oils have less of it.

What did you find?

Basically what z79 said...the zinc, which is the wear additive in the oil (I interpreted that it bonded to the bearings, etc creating a wear barrier), was removed in the CJ rated oils.
The zinc (according to my research) was clogging the DPF when it was burned during the cumbustion cycle thus removed from the oil.

38 psi at warm idle, 60-90 driving

01 stock gauge only goes to 85 psi, But I also use a Autometer gauge that goes to 100 PSI
