At first I did mine to the valve cover. When i seen where the hot oil from the turbo was dumping I changed it to the pan. It is more of a drop going to the pan as well, which helps in draining. Mine goes to the top pan next to the starter. When the truck is running its above the oil line.

I know with the engine off, the oil level is higher than where the turbo drains by a good bit. With the engine running, I am not sure where the level is.

Ya, there is a flat spot you can tap. Just make sure your not all up on top of the starter. make sure you double check to make sure it had clearance

Mine is by the starter in the upper pan as well but my new upper is in the front, much nicer spot but not sure if it can be done in the truck though.

The front of the oil pan is where I always put them. It's easy to get to and just as thick as the rest of the pan. I can text you some pics of the location to drill and tap If you want.

Spot circled in red seems like a good area to me, unless there's something on the inside that I can't see...

That spot will most likely interfere with tranny lines in the truck. With it out of the truck it is a breeze to go into front of the pan. Get it ad close to the lower part of your balancer and it will return above oil level. It would come just above the windage tray inside the engine.

He's right. I should have mentioned I don't run OEM tranny lines.
