How does the ECU calculate when you need a oil change? Is there a sensor that actually measures the oil or is it mileage based. If mileage based what would change the calculation?

I am the original owner of my 2008 2500HD with 178,000 miles. Mods are listed below.

I had my oil changed about 1000 miles ago and this am my Oil Change message came up. Normally I go around 5000 miles before I get the alert.

This is the first time this particular shop changed the oil and this was the first oil change after the new tune. Any ideas?

It's based off an algorithm, it takes time, mileage and regens into consideration.

The system gets messed up with a dpf delete

Can the tuner fix it since we took regens out of the equation with the dpf delete or should I just just go back to changing my oil every x amount of miles.

Where can I get my oil analyzed? Should I be concerned that the oil life I was seeing before is not the same after installation of my mods.

I just change my oil every 10k miles. Have done it this way on 3 duramaxs. 1 powerstroke an one cummins over the last 6 years. No issues

I buy oil sample kits from Petro Service centers behind Petro truck stops. Cost me $17. Put oil in a little bottle, fill out the tag and mail it in. Takes 3-4 weeks to get results back.

Was the oil life reset after the last oil change ?

With my DmaxTuners tunes my oil life drops pretty fast, with ATP it doesn't.
Something to do with the way the tune is written what file its written on, if they include oil life or not, from what I could find out anyways, some LMM's have this happening.

Reset the oil life to 100% and keep a eye on it, if it's dropping about 1% every 10 miles or so, then it's in the tuning.
Contact your tuner and see if he can correct this.

If you can go 80-90 miles before it drops 1% then your oil life was not reset on your last oil change.

I go by miles driven but like to use the oil life for a reference.
