Oil black as coal after 3000 miles

Got a 2001 LB7 with 110.000 miles. I have had the injectors changed 3 times and now have another problem hoping someone can tell me what it means. I change my oil every 3000 miles and yesterday checking the oil found it 2 quarts low and as black as coal and as thick as molasses. Drained it replaced oil filter and oil and upon checking the oil it still is pretty black, Has anyone put kerosene through the engine to clean out the sludge? If not any ideas what the problem is and how to clean this oil up?

Oil being black doesn't mean anything. Like everyone has said, it is normal.

However, being 2 quarts low and thick is not normal.

Who did the last change? What oil did they put in? Do you know if it was actually changed?

I change the oil myself after dealing with quick oil change olaces and found they were not greasing the truck. So I do the oil changes and lube myself. I use Shell Rotella 15w-40w as stated in the manual and also use Lucas oil stabilizer l. I have seen my oil after 3000 miles in the past and it looked as good as when I put it in, so I was wondering why it changed.
Thanks for telling me not to use kerosene to clean out the sludge. Is there any product out there that helps clean out the crap in the engine?

Steve, the Rotella itself has all the detergent properties you will ever need to keep your engine internals clean. Black within 1000 miles is normal on these trucks. I'm assuming the "thick" oil you mentioned had to do with it being cold. You could try some synthetic but that's far more expensive. For a different perspective with DINO oil, you might try using Mobil Delvac 15w40 for a change and see if you like that better. But it really is equivalent to Rotella and turns black pretty quick.

Well freind, black oil is pretty norm for a diesel, but the lb7 has no egr so it has the potential to have "cleaner" oil, aside from upgrading your filtration system ie better spin on and bypass or centrifuge, your stuck with super black oil

Thick oil is no good, try and add some sea foam to yoir oil and run it for a while, use it several times, this will help to break down internal sludge!

Good luck, also running a synthetic for a few will help too

I used Seafoam too to clean it and it helped quite a bit over 3 oil changed. I dump it in just before an oil change and drive it for 100km or 60ish miles then drain it.
