The 5th gear nut spinning off was a CUMMINS issue mostly due to the difference in power spikes. The inline 6 puts out more power per each combustion event of the engine and acts like an impact per say that loosens the nut. That is why you don't hear about it behind the V-8's and even the V-10(which made as much torque as teh CUMMINS did early on), but the I-6 CUMMINS it was a matter of when it was going to happen. If your dead set on a manual, find a truck with one in it as buying all of the dash parts to put the clutch pedal in will nickle and dime you to death.

This thread was not supposed to help me make up my mind. I have already decided I want a manual trans. The question was only about the possibilities of putting a nv4500 behind the duramax. So everyone knows the clutch pedal assembly is not hard to install nor do you have to pull apart the whole dash. I appreciate everyone's input but my mind is made up. There are plenty of threads out there that cover the question of what's involved in the swap. My only issue has been finding the transmission. If the nv4500 was a simple swap then I would have considered it as an option if its not then its not. I'll just continue my search for a zf6.

x2. Ive driven ZF6 trucks with aftermarket clutches and yeah, it was fun for a couple hours, but I would want to drive the truck off a bridge if I had to daily drive it.

Worst that happen is my left leg becomes as strong as my right arm. Lol.

Wonder if you could just buy a ZF6 from a super duty and have an adapter made. there is alot of them around.

haha i wish that was the problem. you cant really tell a difference in pedal pressure. usually your teeth hurt from being rattled around in your head bad. when i changed my clutch i did not notice much difference in pedal pressure. it just engages very rough, but i also put a clutch in my truck that probably has no business being in there

Make sure if u go nv4500 behind a Dmax that u can get a bigger clutch behind the Chevy bell housing that bolts up to the Dmax. When I was looking to do that to my old truck I talked to southbend and they didn't think you could get a dual or triple disc clutch to fit in the Chevy bell housing. But maybe someone makes a different housing that would bolt up to the Dmax or makes an adapter plate to use a bigger one.

valair dual disc, sintered iron. when i bought it i had the choice between a 650hp clutch or a 750hp clutch. the 750 was only $200 more so i was duh, no brainer right? wrong, it grabs really hard and is somewhat hard to drive on the street, not pleasant in traffic or in parking lots, and a bitch when backing a trailer

Have you done a ZF swap? The clutch pedal assembly is the worst part. When we did the swap on the puller we had to take the entire dash out. I bet we spent at least twice the amount of time messing with that damn pedal than everything else.

I have not done a swap but have read every write up I could find. I have read it can be a pain but can be accomplished with out removing the dash. I have replaced the clutch pedal assembly on a 99 1500 and it was not terrible to do. Only difference is drilling a couple holes.

dirty max get a south bend i love it, i got the 650 hp rated one considering lb7's rods can't take much over 600 anyway, it has just enough grab for you to know its there but so streetable i have pulled goosenecks with mine and still use second gear to take off. i highly recommend it, btw just another option i don't know if its different but in 03 dodge common rail trucks had an nv4500 as an option thats right a 5 speed common rail cummins my friend has one, probably more rare then a zf duramax. but he has a dual disk and that thing can't and won't shift fast, mine on the other hand feels like a sports car when banging gears with the zf's tight pattern with a dual disk, and his 03 common rail dodge with a nv4500 stock had a 1 1/4 inch input shaft he upgraded to an inch and 1 1/8 when he did the dual disk.

Looking forward to this. Only thing my new truck is missing is a zf. I still prefer manual after driving a allison. Shaking hands and busting knuckles on dash 'til the day I die.
