I need to cool off and crawl under, but I think my forward driveshaft joint is shot. I'm getting a nasty squeal going forward only, from somewhere amidships. Free revving in park is no problem. In a parking lot I went in reverse and no noise, in drive the squeal followed rotation.

Tonight I'm going crawl under when it cools. Hopefully I can change it at my sisters house and back on the road. My bro in law has NO TOOLS. UGH

Look for rust coming out around the cross and cap area, sure sign of a failed u-joint. Had one making a squeak on an LMM. All were tight but one had some faint rust tracks coming out, fell apart when we changed it, squeak was gone.

Hopefully it's a u-joint, don't need much to change them out.

There's nothing here at the house. A crescent wrench and a smile is it. Not even a bench vise. Maybe I need a local driveline shop. Any recs?

Wow thanks for that info. I was set to run out there tomorrow am, but now I'll go to the other place!

I went out in the rain to check it over, then the storm went crazy and I got soaked and said screw it, lol.

I toyed with fixing it myself, (did a jeep a few weeks ago, done my old dodge a couple times, etc) but it's a short visit with my daughter and sister and we are going out all day tomorrow and then home the next, so I'd rather head out early am and get it done and over with. I'm going to google map that link you gave. Thanks!!

Not even a set of ramps here to keep the fluid from draining if I pulled it. Lol. BUT my bro in law does have a private range and some FA planned after the driveshaft shop ;)

No Bueno. I opened them up and the guy said he won't pull the driveshaft. He also wouldn't loan me a wrench and let me pull it in his lot. So I'm back on the road.

I'm sitting on my ass pacing at Harris. I didn't know where else to go. That other shop told me one place but they were closed.

Keep us updated. My LMM has a similar squeak, been going on for a couple months. Would like to hear what the end result was.

Mine sounds midship from the drivers seat, but my buddy thinks it's coming from the rear. So don't rule out brakes.

My list is brakes, t-case/bushing/seal/yoke, or front shaft. But my noise is 2wd or 4wd.

No luck. They crawled all under it in gear and can't tell. They grabbed it and both joints are tight. They could not figure out the squeak. I climbed under and I couldn't be sure but it sounded more like rear of driveshaft area. Mechanic said drive it home and see if it gets worse, and it won't break getting there. Mmm ok? No charge.

Keep us updated on outcome.

Did you check the rear brakes? Parking brake? Condition of brake fluid/HB fluid? Sticky caliper etc...
How does the transfer case/slip yoke area look?
If all looks good there and no play, try running in the air and see if it will do it without any load on the drivetrain. May even be in the rear diff/axle.

My squeak which sounds very similar and has proven difficult to find and is significantly worse when at operating temperature.
