I am brand new to the forum and to the dmax. I have a 206k mile early 04. It feels strong, good off the line and at speed. But it has a wicked Detroit sounding knock and dumps black smoke under power. The injectors were changed a the dealer in Phoenix at about 175k. I've looked through a ton of posts about balance rates and flow rates. What tool is being used to do this? Scanner or something that's incorporated into a digital monitor? I am assuming on for more injector is just dumping too much fuel or one cylinder isn't burning it. No fuel in the oil so hopefully it's not a burned piston.

All ideas gratefully received. Thanks.

GM tech 2, EFI LIVE V2, Snap on scanner, I'm sure there are more but I have used these. Sounds like 1 or more bad injectors... Sorry. Welcome to DD

Might as well get a CTS, for the many other uses it has, it's worth it In my opinion.

Try some good fuel injector cleaner for a few tank fulls, I have a buddy that that started happening to his truck and he did this and continues to add the cleaner and it's been 3 years now still running on the same Injectors and the knock hasn't returned yet.

The best way is the GM upper cylinder cleaner and let the feed line right above the drivers side al e co er draw the cleaner from right there, we also disconnect the return fuel line and return it to the same jug the truck will idle for about 3to 4 hours running off of 1 gallon of cleaner/diesel mix and it keeps cleaning the whole time.

Oh and welcome to DD:thumb:

It seems like EFIlive is the most popular tuner on here, just based on members' signatures. Is this an issue that will cause damage, i.e. can I drive the truck while I sort this out?

Hard to say without seeing the truck first hand. Do you have a programmer of any sort? Diablo Pradator can read the balance rates and I think the Hypertech can also do it. These programmers are fairly inexpensive and a good tool to have in general. It would be good to invest in something you can read codes and balance rates with.
