I have a '05 LLY with a stock tranny and yesterday i pulled out of my drive way and looked forward and noticed that there was a puddle of oil on the ground right were i was parked which never means something good :( so i pulled up and jumped out and thought it might have been motor oil because i just changed my oil and thought i might have left something loose are something jiggled loose but when i hopped out i looked underneath my truck and i could see tranny fluild dripping down off my tranny and on the ground it was ATF fluid. So i get underneath and i can not see where it is coming from it kinda looks like somewhere from the top but it seems to be doping alot because its all over the backside of my truck now. I am living in Wyoming right now and its been in the negetives and im wondering if the cold broke or did something to a line? Can anyone help me with solving this? Could it be something internal?

Try and pinpoint the leak. Take pictures. Remember we cannot see what you see and you are not trained to see the correct leak. Could be coolant leak.

OK, so i did what Mike said about pin pointing it as best as i can so thats what i did i checked the coolant lines and they are good! I ran my fingers all up and down the tranny and nothing. So i wiped all the fluid away and gave it a rest. I got under there yesterday and the leak is coming from the vent hole that is at the bottom of the tranny. So ive talked to some guys about this and one of them says its probably the seal thats between the tq converter and the tranny and the seal has gone bad and thats why the fluid is coming out at that place. So if this is correct ill have to take it in and have them tear it apart and put a new seal in correct? Has anyone ever heard of this happening? And yes i probably sound like a noob but bare with me

My truck is having this same problem. It seems to leak worse when it's really cold. I have a thread on here asking about it and it sounds like it is that tq converter seal.

x2 on that. To do the upgrade or change that seal (if that is the problem) you will have to pull the trans either way. So maybe keep an eye on your fluid level and live with the leak until you can afford to purchase a kit to do it yourself or purchase an already complete unit from Mike L or many other qualified place that build transmissions. To pull a trans and put it back in not including any R&R has taken myself and a friend usually about 5 hours. I believe it calls for about 10 hours total so at that 900 still sounds really pricey. Just my 2 cents post up what u decide to do.

yeah thats how i am thinking also because if the tranny is gunna be pulled out wouldnt it be cheaper and better in the long run to build it now? Im not really so much planing on pulling and installing it myself so thats why i am thinking about labor hrs because the seal probably costs like 20 bucks and the other 980 dollars is for labor probably. Im living in Wyoming right now and i can either call and talk to Idaho Rob or drive to ATS again because i think they are both somewhere around six hours for me either way.

Thats way too much $ I got a quote for a friend from a reputable tranny builder. He quoted $400.00. This seems on the low side to me but for someone that pulls allisons out on a weekly basis it's probably a good little hustle. I would think 5 to 6 hundred tops.

Yes ghostrider it would save you money if you want the seal replaced now to have the rebuild done at the same time. Would save you the labor of pulling the trans out and putting it back in then later having the trans pulled and put back in again. If u plan to put any kind of power to the truck or plan to put more power to it later I wouldn't skimp on tranny parts when u have it built. I would do everything but have Billet input and out shafts ($1500 or so for the set of 2) unless you are looking to go over 800hp. Throw in a quality made converter like Precision Industries, ATS, Goerend Brothers, PPE,and some of the Suncoast builds. ANy of those should be a good converter IMHO. Typically street trucks u get a lower stall in the converter by 200 or so RPMs supposed to make it easier on the trans is what I am told. There have been a lot of complaints in general about converters not being "tight" enough where they wont stay locked up at WOT from 2nd gear up. There's some new friction material coming out atm if you are patient you should be able to take advantage of the new Technology for the Allison. I know suncoast just released their GMaxpac setup that is supposed to be better than the Red Eagle ALto clutches(although im not sure why ALto already offers a single sided friction steel setup). Now I know Mike L has been testing some clutches I believe are similiar but are of his own design. So you may want to take some time and try and find out what the differeance is with these new packs and make the best decision you can. Either way you go Red eagles or the new Packs from Mike L if built properly you should never have to do anything but change filters and fluid on your Alli and she will be good to go:thumb:

Yeah thats what im saying! If its out then you might as well put some money into it so you can play with it, 800hp seems like alot to me right now but ill more then likely reach it one day and then have to worry about a tranny again. But i called GM and another transmission shop and they say this isnt a surprise but not so much a common thing with the torque converter and or seal. The estimates they gave me were from 1000 to 2000 dollars for either a stock tq converter or a heavy duty one that still wont last. So now im just in the boat whether or not i throw another couple thousand into another build tranny again or just have GM fix it and i stay driving around in a slow truck. :( But no matter what i do im gunna have to do it in a hurry because this is my DD so if anyone could point me into the direction of some vendors that can give me a good deal on a setup it would be greatly appreciated!! :thumb:
