Only done it once since then. And if I shut the truck off and restart it it'll work just fine. So I haven't worried about it yet since it's not causing any problems at the moment.

Well I had sh!t hit the fan earlier this week. My fiance was driving the truck and the cel came on and the 4x4 light showed the truck in 4lo. But it was still in 2wd. Also the cruise control wouldn't work either.

Took it to a parts store and had the codes read. P0836 I think was the first. Something about the 4x4 switch. P0500 something about wheel speed sensor and P0700. Their scanner wouldn't read the actual tranny code.

I cleared them and the cel has been off and its driven fine since then. But I need to get this fixed it looks like.

Any ideas?

P0836 isnt a code that is listed. i would try to get someone to scan it with a tech2 or something that will read codes from the transfer case control module.

I'm going to run it up to Jess's shop in the next week or two. In the mean time google found me a GM bulletin pertaining to '03s but it sounds like what's up with mine as well. Bulletin # is 03-04-21-001C. I think that's the right # anyway.

Pertains to service 4wd message, 4wd system inoperable, 4wd switch indicator lights blinking and grinding noise from front axle. Sounds like all my symptoms. Also says codes p0836 and p0500 pertain to it as well. Says the tccm may need replaced?

Any insight on that Ian?

ok so im an idiot first of all. i was looking the P0836 up wrong, so thats why i wasnt getting anything

the bulletin you listed is to replace the encoder sensor inside the encoder motor on the transfer case. that is what usually goes bad when there is a problem with the 4x4. the P0836 is a type B dtc so chances are you have a C0327 set in the transfer case module that will more than likely lead you to the encoder sensor in the encoder motor.

there are numerous problems with these systems but i would say you have a bad encoder sensor based on what you say it is doing and the codes you are getting.

Awesome! Thanks Ian! I found a how-to on fullsizechevy.com with a lot of great pics on how to replace the sensor. I'm pretty sure I won't have any problem tackling it myself. Rockauto has the acdelco sensor for $55 too. Will I have to have the tccm reprogrammed or anything after I install the new sensor?

Do you suppose the front axle grinding when it engages is a separate issue? I saw that the bulletin says to pull it apart and inspect for damage and replace if necessary. I'd imagine its not related to that sensor.

no problem man. you shouldnt have to reprogram the module when you replace the sensor.

and as far as the grinding goes, i would do the sensor first and see if that takes care of it. its possible that the sensor being bad could be causing the front diff actuator to be off as well and causing it to grind.

Well after forgetting about it for a while, I replaced the sensor in the encoder motor. Pretty straight forward to do. But the indicator light on my 4x4 controls still shows that the tcase is in neutral. Its actually still in 2wd though. And it wont switch out of neutral, into 4wd or 2wd the light just blinks for about 15 seconds then stops and the red neutral light stays on. I tried resetting the computer by disconnecting the batteries for about half an hour but that didn't have any affect.

I put some miles on it after that and I haven't gotten a single "service 4wd" message yet. No CEL or anything. I'm kind of at a loss here.

This is the little bugger I replaced...

None that turn on the cel. And no service 4x4 message anymore either. The tcase just thinks its in neutral and won't switch out.

I had similar issues without the grinding when engaging. This happened for about two weeks then the batteries died. I had them tested, one was bad and the other was weak. Put two new batteries in and problem went away. I didn't investigate any farther because the problem went away. I don't know if that was the problem but that is what happend to mine.
