ok, I just purchesed a 2003 ec/sb lb7. Totally stock. I just put a 4" straight pipe on it. I want to start building the truck up to a 450-500 horse range. Before i start changing turbos or transmissions or head studs or anything crazy i want to get all my safety in place first. I wanna do gauges and intake first thing. Im thinking a triple pod on the pillar. what gauges you think would be best to get and where is a good place to buy them? i dont need something top of the line just something that functions good and looks good. I also want something that is fairly simple to put in. The truck has never had injectors or anything done to it. which worries me but the truck runs like a top.D
Cory: If you are intent on the 450 to 500 HP range you will have some serious, expensive, work to do. The factory built the truck with a certain level of HP/Torque in mind. This level seems to me to be 4" Exh, Modified Air Intake system and basic programmer, such as the EDGE products.
I have the Banks Ram Air Intake System and a 4" Exhaust, No CAT, and was running an EDGE Juice with Attitude.
At this level of power everything ran fine. Above this level you start to encounter the "Above Factory Power Level" issues. The basic weak links are possible blown head gaskets, ARP Head Studs fix this issue. Another common weak link is the factory Allison Transmission.
The Allison Trans when pushed too hard will protect its self by going into "Limp Mode". When this happens you will know its time to start thinking about possible damage to the transmission and upgrading its ability to handle more HP and Torque. Mike Lovrich of Inglewood Transmission, See his section on this web site, is the person who upgraded my transmission. Mike is the person who can best address Allison work, he is the best.
The reason that the "Above Factory Power Level" issues need to be addressed at this power level is after the normal three basic upgrades for HP/Torque most will go to a Top Tuner, such as Adrenaline Truck Performance (ATP) and have Idaho Rob Coddens do some vehicle specific EFI Live tunes. This can put you into the range of 500HP and 1000 FtLbs of Torque.
Gauges, I run Auto Meter. Cheaper gauges are OK but you stand the risk of replacing them more frequently.
I am running 5 gauges, Fuel and Rail Pressure EGT and Boost with a supplemental gauge to monitor my built transmission.
A lot of the modification to get to this level of power require some serious wrenching on you LB7 engine. Find a high quality HP Diesel shop in your area to guide you forward.
If you have further questions myself or others on this site will try to assist you.
