Hi, I just had a Transgo, Jr, installed on my LBZ along with EFI w/DSP5. The shop I bought it from did the relearn which was a few passes at light, 1/2, 3/4, and WOT. I didn't like the WOT part because I baby my truck, but anyway. It shifts great on the tow settings (40 and 80 hp w/turbo brake), but the 120 hp tune which I don't plan on using much at all, still shifts funny. It's kinda firm and acts like it's not sure when to shift exactly. The guy at the shop told me that I needed to drive it pretty aggressively for the first couple of weeks, and even 'stand on it' a couple of times to let the Transgo relearn.

So I have two questions. First, do I need to do what he said and drive it hard to help it relearn, or just drive it like I would everyday, which is fairly conservative, and let it learn. Second, I tow a 12k fifth wheel and we're going camping this week. Is it going to shift funny for a while in T/H also? What can I do before I hook up to help it smooth out beforehand.

Thanks, I did a search on all of this and couldn't find exactly what I was looking for, so if this is a repeat of anything I apologize :sorry:

Thanks,
Tommy

I wouldnt run the 80 or 120 tune until you have a converter and never pull any trailer with it turned up unless you have gauges to see whats going on with your temps. The trans does smooth out after being driven if all work inside was done correct.

No need to drive it agressively to learn. Drive it normal. If hard shift persists then there is something wrong with trim valve assembly.

Relearn

I only got the EFI really for the turbo brake for pulling, a cleaned up stock tune for daily driving, and a 40 hp tow tune. The guy just put the 80 (w/turbo brake) and 120 on there because he said he had a couple places to fill up on the DSP5 in case I wanted them. I do have and EGT probe on my Insight to watch temps.

Like I said, it shifts great on the modified stock, 40, and 80 hp tunes. The 120 is just kinda wierd. It does seem to shift firmer, and when it goes in reverse it's pretty firm, too.

Mike, should I get on it a little bit hard in T/H mode so the increased load and line pressure won't freak it out when I pull my camper the first time?!

Thanks again!

Transgo

Tranny has smoothed out alot over the last couple days. Hooked up my 5er and pulled it today on 40hp tow tune w/turbo brake, did great! Shifted smooth, wasn't rough at all. The turbo brake wasn't as aggressive as I thought, though. Oh well. Thanks guys!

Relearn shifts necessary?

One more question guys. The guy at the shop who puy my Transgo and EFI in said he did the 'relearn' for me. The way I undersrand it is that you do a couple passes at light, medium, and WOT through all the gears. My truck's never been at WOT in its life because I baby it. It shifts wonderful now, but does this 'relearn' do any damage to the tranny, even with the Transgo? Maybe I'm a little overprotective of my truck, but I just want it to last a long time!

Thanks,
Tommy

Most guys that build Allison's use a TECH II's for a relearn. Which won't hurt your tranny.

:(
Thanks, I will get my programming guy to adjust it for me.

ive got a 140 tune in mine on a stock tranny and its wot every day. got 120k miles and it works perfect:woott:

You either don't hit wot that much or you're not making 140 extra HP...transgo helps but its only a bandaid and bugs tune still do damage

WOT passes will not hurt your truck any. Will do it some good every now and then. I'm super protective and like my stuff nice but if I couldn't WOT the truck, car or whatever it is I wouldn't own it.
