So this is my first post on the website but im gonna do my best. I have a 2001 lb7 that i bought off an older guy with 165k miles on it. Only mods are a 100hp tune and 4 inch straight pipe. Two nights ago i was giving it some gas maybe about 75% and gradually led onto the pedal when the truck wouldnt down shift thought it was alittle weird when suddenly it felt as tho it popped outta gear, pressed the break popped back into gear so i rolled to a red light and noticed the truck was stuck in what seemed to be 3rd gear and wouldnt go into any other gear including reverse. Shut the truck off than back on again and its still throwing a code but will shift. Got a quote for $4,100 on a brand new allison w all the upgrades from over the years. So the real question is bigger and better(what im leaning toward) or the new stock one. If i was to go bigger i would need some suggestions. Thank you

$4100 is in the ballpark for an upgraded rebuild with a new converter, clutches and valve body modifications. Make sure whoever does the work has a good reputation with Allison transmissions. Lots of guys pay big money and end up with a trans that won't even hold power as well as the stocker.

If you are in Florida and looking for a built trans to hold some power you should get in touch with Suncoast.

$8k why shipping? Mine was $6k and I strip the planetaries on top of clutches and converter.

First off if that's the power level you're shooting for you're going to have to build the bottom end to have any longevity. You're also starting to push the limit of stock turbo and injectors.

Second, don't go cheap. Pay once, cry once. I believe you're starting to look at some billet internals for the trans when you're starting to crest the 600-650 range. I believe around the 650-750 you bump up the line pressure once again. My numbers may be off, it's what I think I recall from when I was building mine. Maybe talk to Evan on here, discuss your plans and see what he would charge to ship one to you.

Ya that's nuts, maybe with all the billet goodies. But for your power levels i wouldn't bother with billet shafts, hubs etc.

Most guys shooting for 600hp don't have or need $8k in the trans and $10k in a build engine. That's not to say it couldn't end up costing that at some point.

Full billet trans , everything you can put in one including billet flywheel is around $8k+in parts alone . I know I just built mine. So trans builds are not cheap. Evans kit with billet input is around $4200+ freight that's parts alone doing it yourself. That still leaves a lot of $$$ in parts if you want a full billet trans.

I'd say $5500-6500 for a good built trans if your paying for it to be built and shipped.

Didn't say he needed a full engine build at that power goal but it sounds like he may have a bit of a heavy foot and at 600 hp LB7 turn stock rods into bananas at one point or another.

Also he is the one that said he needed a trans to hold 700, taking it as a hint towards future ambitions, so I was just telling him of some of the stuff he'll be looking at when he starts going beyond the 600. This is why I also told him to talk to Evan

I had Mike L. rebuild mine and it was about $5k. He said you don't need billet for 600 hp

That's what Mike L built mine for last winter, including a 3 disc billet torque converter. He said it's good up to 750 before you need billet shafts. That includes removal and installation.

Yep, I arrived at 7am and was on the road by 4pm. The other shops I talked to said they would need my truck for a week and it was more money.

If Suncoast does the install and the taxes would be pretty close to the number he's saying.

8K for a built tranny? :hmm: Mine wasn't even close to that.

In February I had a MikeL trans with a Goerend "R" convertor shipped to Boise & installed locally with a pump rub kit and brace for $6k...

Thanks MikeL!!!
