Allison 5sp: New tranny runs 200* empty

A buddy's trans died on him and he had the dealer install a new stock trans. He drove it today and his temp was 200* empty no trailer. The dealer told him that is normal. According to the dealer his trans cooler flowed twice the normal spec. I have never seen a trans run 200* so is this actually normal.

Thats high for stock IMO. How did the dealer flow check the cooler? If it is truly stock, its probably a cooler problem.

Good point, overfull is just as bad as underfilled

Overfull. Take two quarts out and ill bet it will drop a bunch.

What Tony said. When the level gets too high the pto gear or the tone wheel on the front rotating assembly dips into the fluid and churns it causing bubbles and heat.
