Well the twin turbos for my truck are on hold for a couple more months. Wife and I picked up a Polaris 900 RZR XP on Friday.

Pretty sick little ride. Coming from my modded, built motor canam outlanders this thing is a nice bridge between comfort and performance. I can't give up the rush of my canams but this thing flat hauls for a SxS!

I need to pick a color and pattern to dip the plastics. I will post up a few ideas and see what yall think

I was just about to ask if you were going to have it out on New Years. My dad's RZR is having problems with the transmission popping out of low gear, but I'll see if I can't get him motivated to get the parts to fix it.

What year rzr? The pressed on gears back off. We can have my bro split it, replace the bearings and weld it up to keep it from happening again. Common problem, especially if you run it hard

It's a 2010. I read something about a design change that causes the problem. They supposedly put out an updated part to fix it.

Just talked to my brother. He said you need to look at your production date. Pre-march 2010 required an update that the dealer would install under warranty.

Odds are, you are pre-march production date. I can get you a parts list to do the upgrade yourself and if you want. My brother can also illustrate where to weld the internals to keep everything in place for a long time.

Depending on how hard/aggressive yall ride, you might need to replace all of the bearings and thrust washers. Also, if you have been riding it for quite a while with it popping out, odds are that the gears themself may be rounded off and even with the update it will continue to pop out of gear.

Not sure if you have a hookup or not, but I can get everything at a discount for yall. Hopefully I can help you out for once since you've been helping me all these years with my truck!

Night and day difference between the 2. i was actually shopping for a rzr S before I picked up this XP. The rzr S is a great machine, but the 900 is just a whole new beast. If your RZR S is modded out, you could probably sell it for a pretty penny and not put much into upgrading to the 900. The RZR has incredible resale value!

My first complaint is the front drive shaft being so long and the odd 2 piece slip joint design with a piss poor carrier bearing. Even with a new carrier bearing you get drive train feedback when in 4wd and under hard accelleration. I'm looking into making a change here already.

The other thing that sucks is the XP is so dang wide! It doesn't seem like much, but there is quite an adjustment after getting used to the RZR S on the trail. This 900 seems to want to clip every tree on the trail! Just takes a little getting used to.

Dad already tried the dealer and calling Polaris directly with no luck. He has a pretty good hookup with the dealer in Athens, but if you could PM a price on all the parts, it would be nice to have something to compare. Any info you could give me would be helpful. It has popped out or skipped just a handful of times before the last time we took it out, but the last time we took it out, it would not hold low gear at all. It works fine in high range.

Oh i know. Its finally just where i want it. Im gunna give it till mext year amd see what other rigs come out. I may just throw a turbo on my s too. I mainly dune and desert ride my rzr and it would be nice to have that extra "umph" to stay with the xp's and sand cars. The owners of jagged x are really good family friends of ours and they let us play in their cars at the dunes right after their release (ploaris gave them 5 xp's last year to reveal at glamis on new years day). I got glad ass very quick. I dont mind the width as we dont do much trails that the witdh would hinder it. I love the way the trailing arms work over whoops, night amd difference over the a-arms.

On the tranny issues. Is this only on the '10? Mine is a later 09 with a hard 1500 miles on it but no trans issues (shes been desert raced, wore out a primary clutch already, tore up motor mounts in one weekend after i bought it, shaved the head and tuned the ecm before i even drove it once ,and never gets "putted around"). Are the older ones not an issue?

James, from what I could find on the transmission, in 2010 they redesigned the transmission to make it easier to come out of park when on an incline. When they did this they made some changes to the input shaft and it allows a retainer to spin against a groove in the shaft (on previous models it was all one piece) and it allows the gear to slide on the shaft. They redesigned it when they discovered it was a problem. Actually, I think there were two or three redesigns.

Also, it's only a problem with low range. If you primarily run high range, you'll probably never have a problem. We do slower trail riding and hill climbing.

Ah good to know. Ive only heard about the issue and skimmed it on the rzr forum but never persude looking into it. I know the secondary clutch on those suck cause you cant change the helix without changing the whole thing amd ive been told it just dont work as well as the older ones but i have nothing to compare that.

Chevy1925, you are lucky on the tranny issues if you are a mud rider and ride hard. If you are just hitting the trails and the dunes, then you should be pretty safe except for normal wear.

The original 08 style is the best design for handling the abuse of mud riding. They changed in 09, then pre March 2010 they changed again and had a design flaw, post March 2010 the update was already being installed during production to cure the popping out of gear. They can all do it, it just a matter of bearing wear, tolerances, and thrust washer wear. The 09-up style wear much quicker from what I have seen and use a horrible thrust washer design that wears to the point that the shift collar can't hold its proper place on the tooth face. Once it starts popping out of gear, then the tooth face rounds off and it can no longer hold under torque and actually forces the shift collar away and out of engagement. That is why it's very important to stop while you are ahead. The cost of the actual gears and shift collar is much more than thrust washers and bearings. I can go all day on these transmissions with their pros and cons, but you guys get the idea.

JoshH, you need to go ahead and pull that transmission apart. You are welcome to call and I can help you through it. I need to know how bad the teeth on the shift collar and gears are before I can generate a parts list for you. I hate to tell you to send it to me and run out of time for the New Years ride, so the best bet is to build it yourself if you are up to it. It's really not difficult, just some little small tricks to make it better. If you can have it out and in College Station by Wed., then I could have it built by the 23rd if no parts are on back order. Getting the parts are the hardest part of the whole deal. It's usually the small stuff that sets you back on time. We have a box full of left over parts as well just in case you get in a bind. Might even have a complete 09 welded transmission that we could sell.
