That's what I meant. Sounds like an external noise. Bet we can find it on the rack.

I was thinking of putting it on jack stands taking the wheels off and putting it in drive, keep it in first and bring the speed and RPM up. tracking the noise that way. Rack seems safer though.

well looks like she might have figured it out, ill let her chime in

Does the front driveshaft rotate in 2wd? I don't think it does. Only in 4wd.

Does the sound happen in 4wd or 2wd? If only in 2wd I don't think pulling the drive shaft will help.

If its the tcase Mike will definitely be able to help you.

I would have the tcase checked out.

When it happened, did you have the truck in 4wd or 2wd doing the burn out/4wd launch?

Do you have jack stands to put it on? That is going to be about the only way to pinpoint the noise... Or swing in to Mikes tomorrow and have him put it on the rack real quick.

My thinking is if you are in 2wd and it is making the noise from the front driveshaft, something is wrong with the tcase because the front driveshaft should not be turning in 2wd.

Jack stand or swing by mikes shop is about the only way you are going to find the problem.

You say the noise is there with or without the shaft but quieter with the shaft out, I'm wondering if the shaft was just transferring and/or amplifying the sound. The front shaft runs directly below the drivers seat so it could make the noise more noticeable. Could be an issue anywhere in the driveline (rear end, transfer case, etc.) and transmitting up through. Put the front shaft back in and remove the rear one. It would tell you if the noise is from the transfer case forward.

If I had to place a guess, I'd say something in the rear locker let go when you hit the pothole and now the sound is transmitting through the driveline. Be interesting if you pull the rear cover and see any pieces.

If the noise is getting less all the time it could be that whatever is rubbing is wearing a groove to where it is rubbing less the more she drives it.

Sounds just like when I get a rock stuck between the disc hub and rotor. Happens alot since I drive mostly gravel roads. Sometimes I'm in too big of a hurry to do anything and it will stay in there for 50-60 miles.

Still haven't pop the the rear diff cover off?
There is a drain plug on the bottom of it.. Iirc 3/8" drive. OEM setup holds 4qts

Welcome

Nope, took it to Mike's today & it ended up being the rear ujoint in rear driveshaft that I just replaced not even 5 months ago, but driving home I didn't hear anything, so I think the problem is solved
