Hey guys new to this place so a big hello to you all. I have a simple question on my 2011 HD3500 GMC which I have just completed my first oil change on and topped up the urea(as it was showing 800km left). Problem is my display still says to check or service exhaust fluid system. If someone can school me on reset procedure I would appreciate it in advance.

Thanks Ratzy

Can't be of help but welcome to the forum. There are a few guys on here that have LML's so I know someone can chime in and help!

I have 2000 miles on mine and I've never put DEF Fluid in yet. The light should go off if you filled up to the spec of 5.5 (I think?) gallons.

Here is some info from this PDF from GM.

Once the system is refilled, the system resets itself and a
service visit is not required. It may take up to 30 seconds in park or several
miles of driving to update the DEF level warning.

And this:

See your Duramax owner’s manual
supplement for a complete description of the electronic onboard warning
system and its warning messages.

Also, it's Urea, not Urine. I hope you didn't piss in the tank

if the truck is limiting you on how fast you can go it is very low on DEF the next step is for it to not start. i would check to make sure the tank is completely full.

And a little advice be very careful with DEF it will destroy aluminum, stain blacktop, and really do some damage to paint if it is left on there too long

I'm guessing because it's thanksgiving and they're closed. ;)

I was talking about GM in general.
And this guy could be from Canada as he has nothing in his sig to say where he's from. Our thanksgiving was 6 weeks ago.

Sounds like it was either the wrong Urea solution (it requires a very specific concentration, somewhere around 40-50%, I can't recall right now), or very poor Urea.

Where did you get it? Did it say "Diesel Exhaust Fluid" on the bottle? I'd try siphoning out as much as possible and refilling with good fluid, then see what happens.

Or, have the codes read first. It will probably tell you exactly what it doesn't like about the situation. That is your best bet to get back on the road.

Finally, as others have said, what is your location (Canada/US?) and please fill out your signature with info on your truck (look at what most people on here have). Good luck!

Since he's using kilometers, I'm guessing he is outside the US.

Sorry guys I was away for the weekend, yes I am in Canada and al things are pointing to the fluid being frozen.. I just spoke to the dealer and all kinds of horror stories have been rolling in. Apparently they are working with engineers to come up with a fix pronto as maybe the heating system wasnt sufficient to heat that amount of volume, they are recomending to not fill over half unitll GM comes out with their buleting/fix. Bummer what a pita !!!

Let us know what happens if you siphon half out. If it starts working, that would be interesting...

What are the outside temperatures when you are having the problem? I am curious how cold it gets where you are at.

This was my biggest concern for guys in the northern tundra. 5 gallons of fluid is alot to defrost when it has frozen in -40* temps overnight. It is going to cause all sorts of issues very soon.
