Hey everybody. I just bought a 2006 2500hd duramax/allison. Its a great truck but the fuel gauge is crazy. It says its empty (like below E) but will only take 18 gallons of to fill up. The Info thing also says I only went through about 17.5-18 gallons. Is the sending unit bad or is there a known problem? Thanks, Micah.

I only put about 19 gallons in or so when my fuel light comes on. Seems about normal.
The gauge is calibrated on the "plus" side so people run out of fuel less often. :D

Must be a 06/LBZ thing as I know when I am on "E" I can fit about 75 litres and if my math bis right that is about 20 gal.

but this is not when the light comes on this is on "E" so if he filled up with the like he might get only 15-16 gal in.

As he said it was below "E" yet only 17.5-18 gal.

this is a known problem for these style trucks pretty soon all the gauges will go out once it started. over time you will notice the volt. and speedo..ect.... its the stepper motors is what goes bad its common. heres a link to a guy i had mine rebuilt by on ebay read his description an youll see. i even put the white back plate in there while he had it. and gives you warrenty. pretty much redoes your whole dash. and if you decide to do this you can drive without the dash i done it while he had mine.

How big is the tank on a crew cab short bed 4x4? I thought it was about 28 gallons. My 2000 z71 was like 24 or 26. Either way how is it showing E when it still has at least 6 gallons in it? Thats like 1/4 tank left.

The LBZ light comes on early. The most I have ever put in was 20 and that was driving with the light on for a long time.

Sounds like the problem, mine takes 26 gallons from bone dry.

You have a 26 gallon tank... It says fuel leyel low and throws the light on when your down to 6 gallons left. I'm guessing they do this because not every fuel station sells diesel, and not really for this HPCR trucks but older diesel engines have to have work done to them once they run out of fuel... The fuel injjecter lines need to be cracked and then try to start to the truck to bleed all the air out of the lines. Our trucks dont have a problem starting once the fuel hits the cp3 HP pump, it's got enough ass in her to push the air out on it's own.

That's just my take on why it says low fuel with 6 gallons left

Sorry, when the light comes on it has only gone through 12 gallons. When it gets a little past "E" I can only put about 18 gallons in it.

I would take it into the dealer if theres warranty left on it.
I thought you had a shortbed, those only come with a 26 gallon tank, so if you have a 30by your math (12+18) than you have an aftermarket tank. Somebody may have screwed up the unit when installing the bigger tank and may put you out of warranty, not sure. But I would see what the stealership has to say before you try tinkering with it
