OK,
Tried doing some new injector nozzles in my truck & it's back together now but it just cranks & cranks but wont fire. getting some grey smoke coming from the exhaust pipe (st8 piped) I tried to follow McRat's injector nozzle R&R. I am wondering if i missed anything that i should have not overlooked when putting the injectors back in or is there something i could try to get it to run.Any help out there?

you probably lost one of the little shims in one or more of the injectors when you took them apart. Its not starting because the injector(s) are hung open due to that tiny shim missing.

Its very easy to lose them, they are no bigger than the head of a pin.

Pull the glow plugs, unplug the FICM so the injectors wont fire and crank the engine. It will be very obvious which injector got messed up during the nozzle swap....

fuel will shoot out the glow plug hole. not a ton, but enough to tell you which ones are stuck open

Ok i took out the glow plugs today & also unplugged the FICM turned the truck over & i did find a big leak on my # 8 injector but i don't believe it is from the insides. the lines that connects to the top of the injector & has a clip to hold it in is broke & that is where the fuel is pouring out. What i would like to know is where to get these lines & just for the hell of it if i could get some shims that i just do not see in any of my injectors. There were a few that i had to take completely apart & i understand that i may have lost them buy there are also a few that i carefully took apart today that dont have these shims in them.So another question is do all injectors get shimmed? need to get these parts in so if anyone can help out i woill next day them to me if you have them.

Pretty sure you can't buy just the shim, you would have to buy a new injector. I'm sure someone would have some maybe Socal, Bigdipper, etc. Are you sure you lost the shim? It's between the needle and the injector body, where the tip meets the injector. Like mentioned above, only the size the head of a pin.

I am sure they are not there, but why are they not there on some injectors that i did nothing to? I do know there size because i do have some that are there.

They are pretty easy to lose, especially if it sticks to the needle when you pull the tip off. I have had a couple do this.

anytime you take the nozzle off of an injector you expose the shim and can lose it (very easily) and not even know that you lost it.

I guarantee thats what happened if it wont start and you are getting gray smoke out the tailpipe.

I am sure that is a problem because i wasn't careful when doing them. That is why i need to do something quickly that will let me get this solved. I do need that line that clips onto the top x2 & if i have to i will buy some cores to get the shims so any body that can help me with that it will be much appreciated,!

Any vendors here have a part # for the line that clips onto the injectors & shims.

does the truck sounds like it is have trouble cranking or almost hydrolocking as you crank it?

if so yeah i would bet one of the shims is no longer in the injector.....

been there done that, and it blows, i was lucky i found mine sitting on my clean white sheet i used as a workbench.

Pulled the glow plugs today & it sounds fine except fuel pouring out of the #8 injector, I believe that is from a busted line where the clips are on top. But i really am in need of parts now & no one has come up to bat yet so it looks like i will be down awhile. I am hoping the stealership has the line that i am talking about that clips on top of the injector

That line that clips on top of the injector is just a return line and will not prevent it from running. If you are missing a shim, you should have fuel shooting out of the glow plug hole when you are cranking the truck.

no fuel at all shooting out,Only place it's pouring out is #8 injector head.

well if i were you i would log rail pressure while cranking. it will tell you right away if you need to pull the injectors back out and rip into them again... and while the computer is booting up i would go get a VERY strong magnet and start looking for shims where you were working.

and if you do find that shims are missing... I'm being told that it is not going to be in your best interest to just buy core injectors and use those shims... There are a bunch of different sizes of those shims and each injector can be different. The likelihood of getting the injectors to work like stock again is slim. New shims are evidently on back order too. My guy says he's been waiting for his order on them for like 6mths.

Also, they can be rebuilt with correct shims BUT its very time consuming and not cost efficient according to my guy.

I'm real sorry to see you going through this much trouble over trying to get yourself some bigger nozzles. What a kick in the nads bro. :(
