Then I guess you have not seen or worked on one that hasn't fully blown ;)

This is true, i have only seen very blown hg's. And it could be the owners not aware or not carring and keeping the foot down. I know they can just weep just never worked on one. I have pulled the head on 6bt's and you can see where it will blow but hasnt done it yet

hoping so, everyone seems so terrified of this job...

but, i look at it as..either i fix it. or my baby is sitting there rotting soooo.... gotta make it rain truck parts

I think you will be surprised, its really just a bunch of crap in the way once its removed or set to the side it isnt bad at all.

Are you going to stud while you are there?

It's just time consuming. Make sure to have the heads checked for cracks and have them decked so they are flat

Have the heads machined while they're off and go with grade c gaskets.

Might as well do studs

Good luck, have fun. It really isn't too difficult. Get a kit with new seals and gaskets and torque properly. Guy has a torque guide on his website if I'm not mistaken. (socaldiesel)

Make sure you adjust your valves when you put it back together. .012

You can upgrade the heads while they're off too. Depends how much you want to spend right now. Machining them is a must though.

You'll have to take them back off when you build the motor anyway and do this all over again

Studs and C's.... Thats an excellent start. Buy your arp studs from a reputable source, there was a large batch of knock off arp studs and bolts here a little while ago on ebay and amazon.

If it was an emission truck i would say drop the egr also. If you want you can send your heads off or buy a polished set and send yours in as core.

I would do water pump also while i am that far into it and thermostats
As stated absolutely get the heads machined and i always check the deck for level while in there

literally changed my thermostats 3 days ago, so i can check that off the list. gotta move a bunch of stuff around in the driveway to get my truck to fit. then going to start tearing down once these storms blow through. my county is supposed to get hit the hardest..dont want my engine exposed to that.

alright guys sorry been having really crappy weather to try and be tearing this motor apart. but i do have some questions for you guys. ive been budgeting and looking at different part combos for upgrades, well the necessities and some extras while its apart. i want to do ARP for sure and gonna get the heads ported and polished. but i found a set from sinister diesel for the gaskets and even an egr block off set up. seems to have almost everything ima replace besides maybe the intake gasket. i was told sinister has been making parts for fords for awhile but may have just started experimenting with duramax. asking for opinions ( with constructive criticism please)

oh and also, while trying to disassemble i found that someone had used the chisel method to remove my clutch fan.....but also did it to put it back on.. after literally 2 hrs of fidgeting with it i just unbolted the whole from of the water pump and pulled it out. going to try and get it apart while at work where i have better access to my diesel tools.
