Im doing head gaskets on my LLY and i have some questions, anyhow while tearing it apart i noticed on cylinder 1 injector, under the high pressure feed line, there was a lot of deposits sitting in the feed port. Attached are some pics. All balance rates were in spec and the truck ran fine. Is this something i should worry about or just clean it out? I sure dont have the funds for a new injector. As it is now theres a hole burning in my wallet. Is there a way to clean these injectors and specifically that one? Also when i take these heads to the machine shop should i have them do anything with the nasty intake valves and intake runners? Any input on this is appreciated. Thanks. First pic is the injector and the others are for fun.

Oh one other thing is when i pulled the lower valve cover off the the driver side i heard something crack and barely seen something fall, i heard whatever it was hit the ground and the only thing i could find was this black half circle piece of plastic. Anyone have any idea what it could be or even if this is what it could have been? One end is clean and the other end is where it broke (jagged)

Could it be oil/carbon/dirt deposits that were on the top/around the threads of the high pressure line. Once removed they could fall into the injector. Looks similar to what an LB7 injector looks like when removed, except its rust and not grime

yes it looks deposits from the injector line that feel in when you removed the line. Someone on here had an idea of take some cleaner in a cap deep enough that you can dip that end in with th eopening facing down. this will allow the deposits to fall out into the cap. dont try to blow them out. also clean the lines with some CLR in a bucket for a half hour and then rinse and blow off

Ok ill get some clr for the injector lines. And what kind of cleaner would i put in a cap for the injector? Brake clean? Trans fluid? Also what are you guys using to clean the block portion of the mating surface? Sand paper on a sanding block? Thanks guys. I just want to do this the right way. Also for some of those rubber return lines and the filter head rubber lines can i just make my own with bulk fuel line?

Do the injectors have build up on them or loose debris around and in the fittings? If it's loose debris diesel will be fine, you just want to get all of it out.

The block and injector mating surface?

Yes you can use regular fuel hose. Just make sure it's diesel and bio diesel compatible. I like to use gates hose, barricade series. Not the high pressure stuff, low pressure will be fine. I know napa caries it

This is what the deck looks like after wet sanding it with 600 grit. Think it will be ok? Also i can physically grab the pistons and rock them slightly back and forth. Should I worry about that?

Also im resealing the timing cover. How important is it to get all the new o-rings for the different things on it? Service info says replace them all. Also i understand the oil cooler is prone to leaking should i address that too or leave it be as its not leaking currently. Thanks guys

Sorry to be off subject.... But your photos's are extremely detailed and are actually teaching me something...
Crazy question tho.... to do the head gaskets you have to take off the whole front nose and fender assembly? Seems like such a daunting task.

You dont have to but it makes it so much easier and enjoyable to work on. Took about an hour to get the front out of the way. But i do this stuff for a living at a gm dealership. Some guys lift the body off the chassis too. Heres some more pics for fun....

I would do the oil cooler while you're in there with the coolant drained. There's two O-rings for the oil paths, a rubber seal and a steel gasket for the coolant path. I did mine at a different time, was a PITA to get in there and had to drain the coolant and had to deal with a mess of oil draining out as well.

I have my engine out and oil cooler off if you want pics.
