Need help with u joints please......................

Looking around merchant autos website what's the best u joints now I noticed there is a 1410 and 1480 both look to be same size and both offer serviceable and not serviceable with/without grease fitting option which ones the better way to go thanks in advance

They're different sizes.

The 1410 has a 1.2" cap
The 1480 has a 1.4" cap

Take another look at Merchant's site.

But in terms of the greaseable/non greaseable some people say the greaseable are weaker because they're hollow.

1480 in 07.5+

Most likely both your trucks in your signature have 1410 series u joints

Interesting. In regards to 01-06 trucks I've found most of the one piece steel shafts in EC/SB, and EC/LB trucks use the 1480 joints.

Most two piece steel behind an Allison are 1410.

All the aluminum one piece shafts are 1410. (Again 01-06).

Typical GM....confusing as all hell. Best bet is to measure what you have, then go from there....

They are almost identical, but are .010 narrower. It gets REAL confusing with GM. MANY people have put 1410's into shafts that came with 1415's, and the only way you know is the u-joints will be VERY tight. They make circlips that are .005 thinner to allow the use of the different joints in the other size shaft.

Ferm ,you just answered something that's been bugging me for a long time. That explains why the 1410 I keep buying don't fit perfectly. I have a 2 piece steel shaft. That explains why they are sooooo damn tight. :mad::mad::mad:

Did they do something similar in the gmt400 platform?

Not that I know of. The GMT-400 used the 3R or S44 for most all the half tons with auto's, the manual trans seemed to get 1330's, and 3/4 ton and up got the 1350 for the most part. GM lost there minds with the GMT-800 and the u-joints with the 1410 and 1415, or the 1480 and 1485. Dimensionally they are almost identical with only a .010 difference in width. You can get the .005 thinner clips as most places don't stock the 1415 or 1485, and if you run the regular they are TIGHT and WILL vibrate.

Where I stand right now would be the 1410 joint being that my wifes 2002 had a two piece but now has a one piece aluminum shaft I swapped in from a buddy's truck who had a ccsb 2004 lly that was lifted and need a longer shaft than stock so he gave me the stock one free it's giving me many years now since 2009 of worry free service but I feel its time to show it some love :thumb:
