Name That Turbo!

While cruising the interwebs today, I came across some turbos that the guy is practically giving away. He doesn't have much info on them, other than they're tight, and they're stamped .80 A/R on the compressor cover. I figured I would ask here and see if anyone could identity them, and tell me whether or not they could be used as a single, or over a stock charger in a compound setup. Here's the pics of them. Thanks in advance for any help :thumb:

From the little that I know about turbos, it looks to me like it's very similar in size to an s480. Would it be a good candidate for a compound setup?

pull the compressor cover and turbine cover off, then measure the inducer and exducer of both ends of the wheel (digital micrometer in MM will be the easiest for you to know). cant say much else based on the info in the pics.

FYI, Inducer is the small end of the compressor wheel (big end is exducer) where the inducer on the turbine is the big end and the small end is the exducer. that will tell us right away what kind of turbo you got.

FYI, Inducer is the small end of the compressor wheel (big end is exducer) where the inducer on the turbine is the big end and the small end is the exducer. that will tell us right away what kind of turbo you got.

The guy is about an hour and a half away, and he doesn't seem much interested in doing any work to make the sale at the price he has them listed ($150). I can't really justify driving there, measuring it, driving back, posting here, then doing it all over again

i thought you already bought them.

thats the only way to tell for sure. otherwise its a crap shoot. that compressor wheel looks small for even a 75mm but the cover intake may be paying tricks on my eyes

half ass guessing based off the measurements you see in the pics compared to wheel size, then converted to MM, it seems its a 72ish mm compressor and possibly a 96mm turbine as the exducer is around 88mm

So I got the serial number off it, and apparently it's a Garrett TV8403. It appears the specs are 88.36x116.84mm compressor wheel
111.5x101.5mm turbine wheel
.81 a/r compressor cover
1.39 a/r turbine housing t6

So it's older than death? Are the TV series good for a compound turbo?

It appears that the design is about 28 years old at this point, although I'm not sure that's a bad thing. I did dig up a compressor map for it. It's over my head, as far as reading it goes, but maybe someone can chime in.

The old TV series garret stuff are good chargers but very old technology. That turbine wheel is very big and will be very lazy to spool. I don't think it would work that we'll over a stock charger.

I have a tv7301. I'm going to use this as over stock. Somebody told me that mpi used tv7301 on their first compound kits. I haven't found any info/experience about ttv7301.

That turbo was designed for high torque, set rpm range on a large cube generator or semi, with ability to have a sharp rise in power when the engine is loaded.

For $150 it worth a shot, but from the shaft speeds listed on that map and the ability to turn 4000+ rpm between shifts you will spin that thing to the moon and it will surely grenade... so I would pass.

I can tell you right now that thing is not an 88mm inducer. From your tape measure, you can see it is around 72mm-75mm. And the turbine also looks to be around 85-90mm. The specs you found are not right.
