Wayne and I had a brief interview with:
Robert Hegbloom - Director Ram Brand Marketing
and
Michael Cairns - Vehicle Line Executive Ram Trucks
q - Why is the tq rating lower on the MT vs AT? Auto trans can handle it. Without beefing up the mt beyond what the average driver can handle they detuned the tq. 10 % of cummins powered pick up truck sales are MT
Q - The Cummins in the Ram trucks dont use DEF, how are you accompliching this? A - We actually met the 2010 epa standards in 2007 in the 6.7 Cummins. It uses a NOx Absorber Catalyst (NAC). We have looked at and improved the duty cycles of the engine in the regular cummins powered pickup trucks. 3.4 % increase in FE not using DEF. Cab & chassis model DO use DEF. due to different duty cycles and increased demand.
Q - Do you take active measures to hinder others from tuning the ECM and deleting the DPF and other emmissions control systems, and if so what? A - Yes, Cummins engineers take active measures to prevent future removal of emmissions and retuning of ecm.
Q- What measures? A - They are working on that at Cummins.
Q - Is the diesel exhaust brake standard and is it adjustable/programmable for sensitivity? Standard yes. Programmable no. Can be turned on and off only.
Q - Tell me about the fuel filtration. A- Cummins engines in Ram trucks now use an on demand lift pump dual filter/water seperator setup. (unsure on micro rating and gph).
Q - I see Dodge claims 7500 mile oil change intervals (based on use), is that with synthetic oil, and what is capacity? A- No, synthetic is not required, 12 qt capacity. Thats a big engine that takes a lot of oil.
Q - What can you tell me about the future of the Cummins and Ram trucks? Is there a v6 and v8 coming, what about an 8 sp auto trans? A - I dont know what you are talking about
Q - What about the Vans, are you going to make another full size HD van with a diesel? A - we are working on some things
