Well after a 15 hour round trip to St. Joseph Diesel I now have me new project motor.


However there are some very intersting things about it I guess.

The Injector hold downs are a thick piece of CNC machined Billet. The CP3 is machined from a piece of Billet, the valvecovers are a lot thicker than stock as well. Also the guys as SJD could not find any numbers cast into it.

I purchased it without the injectors but I think I am going to buy them anyways. The guys started looking at them closer and today when I talked to them they found out the injectors look to be machined out of billet steel as well.

I will get some pics up when I get home and plan to rip the heads off tonite. Maybe ill find some billet rods too.

they are still going to call it the duramax.

the "ultimax" was some stupid thing Diesel Power magazine thought up a couple years ago.

no this is an old motor. something like a prototype LB7, they just didnt have all of the tooling ready so they made a lot of parts by hand. After talking to guy and curtis there are a few of these running around.

this one just got thrown under a bench when they were done.

im uploading the pics to my computer now.

if TIMTHECARMAN2004 sees this he can shed more light as I really dont know too much about what i am looking at

According to the guys at SJD the injector hold downs, CP3, and injectors are machined from billet and are not the same as stock. They also said the valve covers look thicker and different, the fuel rails seem ported more and the pushrods are heavier.

Personally I dont know what I am looking at and without anybody pointing it out I wouldnt have even known. Hopefully somebody from there can chime in with more info.

Vinny, It was a pleasure to meet you and your lady friend. Both very nice people. One heck of a long trip. I am not for sure if I should say billet, but most of the parts seemed to be machined out of a solid piece of metal, and not cast looking like what we see today. I did take some pics of the injectors, but like always I left and the camera is still on top of the tool box. The injectors match the hold downs. They are nice and cut looking unlike the Bosch ones that everyone uses now.

The engine was covered in a bunch of dust, and you couldn't see much of it all. Guy out at SoCal said to look for casting numbers on the heads, but I only saw a few numbers and none of them seemed to be a casting number.

I will post some pics tomorrow, when I get to work. I still have a few more parts that Vinny forgot to grab....;)

you were too busy cleaning out your benchs filling boxes of other goodies and forgot to give me the meat of why I came. hehe.

billet probably isnt the right word, but the way people use that word today i dont think were too far off. Billet seems to be a universal term for anything thats metallic and smooth these days.



o ya and it was nice to meet you and your lady freind rob. Maybe i can have stacy get him a nice hat too.

Come on I had all that $hit organized. LOL. Spring cleaning is going to be in session in the following weeks. Between the LMM build, Finishing Rhall's truck, school, and these engines, I haven't had near the time to put stuff up. :rolleyes:

Wish that I could have loaded the rest of that stuff up with ya and sent it to another state. :D

I am thinking that your right though and that it was a preproduction motor that had some custom parts. Hey if you can post some pics of the rocker assy and valve retainers.
