A lot of time was spent developing those rods, and more care goes into manufacturing than you'd ever imagine. They've only been available for about a year but they're sure not unproven....several big power engines including almost 350mph at Bonneville. There was a thread about this on DP I believe.

People have to suit themselves on a build. But parts are expensive and it's a big hassle if something goes wrong, so cutting corners is false economy. Curtis is building me an engine and I'll be real comfortable knowing it was done right. Hard to put a price on that.
I guess by unproven, I meant there weren't many out there to give them any kind of track record. I'm sure they're a great rod, but at the time, I didn't feel comfortable using them.

I fail to see how doing your own work is considered cutting corners. All the info needed to assemble these engines can be found here. If the person doing the build can follow directions, there's no reason to pay someone else to do the work. I'll be doing it for the second time, and I can tell you, assembling these engines isn't rocket science. As long as you take your time, go one step at a time, and pay attention to detail, it goes very smooth.

^^^kinda like building allisons. Its really not rocket science after your first one. And with me its something i enjoy so everything sticks in my memory.

I already have a feel for these having my other one to play with.

I agree that curtis builds good stuff, and know it would be done right.

However i dont consider carrillos as cutting corners. And going with something thats been on the market for only a year scares me, so ill go with something thats proven.

By cutting corners I wasn't referring to Carillo rods. I was referring to an engine being put together by someone who'd ask questions like #3,4,and 5 .

better than not asking them.

I had a general idea, but wanted to make sure. And I was wrong now I know.

Im 18, do you expect me to know everything about assmebling an engine??

Like I said im in this to learn, if it blows up, it blows up at least I learned something.

ill use my trans building experience. I had some simple stupid goof ups.

1st i couldnt get my C4 snap rings in. Turned out i wasnt paying attention and had the backing plate in upside down.

I cracked a rear housing, how?? I didnt have the P1 planetary seated in the last C4 friction. In addition it also bent that friction.

Then when I had the trans back out again this winter i looked it over and realized i stack the C4 pack wrong. For some reason I stacked a friction on a friction. Didnt work so hot, so I fixed that, i was in a hurry at the time when i put that in so I can see myself doing that.

All minor simple messups. What do you expect, now i know what to expect on trannies.

Another example is my intake. 4am and i dont have my intake adapter and we need to be on the road for the pull at 7am. So i use whats available and weld on an exhaust adpater but dont clean the inside of the intake off. What do i see when i pull of my intake?? A knicked compressor wheel.

Soon ill know what I do wrong on motor builds.

Id rather screw up on my own than somebody elses, you have to start somewhere no other way to gain experience. If you want to get expereince by sitting in a class learning what to do and reading a book, be an engineer.

thanks ripmf666. Ive got it most of the way out, these things are pretty simple to get in and out. Plus its my second time within the last couple months so its still fresh.

I do it a lot different that you do though looking at your pics. I leave everything on it and take it apart on my stand, until its tore down far enough to put on the engine stand.

Still good info to have.

^^^very true.

My First time took probably 6 hours of actual work. But I also opt to completely remove the trans since i have a lift, and need to keep the lift open so I need to be able to roll the truck out of the shop.

Im guessing this one in the end ill have 5 hours in.

When I took my first trans out i had probably 8-9 hours in it(stupid NSBU connectors). Now its about an hour job

First time ever pulling the it was 4hr and 15 min no lift, and we worked part out side and in a 16x24 garage lol, Trans can be pulled in less then 50 mins on the ground no lift.We have found it fun doing these anymore.new little tricks everytime,

my add tends to kick in though and i get sidetracked:D

A lot of days i almost wish I worked in a tiny shop. My lift is on one side of the shop and the tools are 50' away, at least now I know exactly which tools i need to remove the trans, but i still seem to always loose them.

another question im sure ripmf666 and ben can answer for me is, about how much should i budget for the little things (gaskets, seals, etc.). You guys have done this a time or two and would have abetter idea than i would
