In 100% stock trim, the Duramax will spin as high as 4800rpm when in tow-haul descending grades with heavy loads.
I've run them up to 5250rpm under boost. The highest peak HP rpm I ever tuned was 4800rpm with a single GT42mag.
As the RPM climbs, the piston cooling starts to fail. Starting at 4000 rpm, the piston starts to overheat, IMO based on the piston damage.
