Wow, that Dodge did have some bark. The swoosh you hear can be reduced its a mild bark or surge. Its like golf kinda... a "fade" (surge) is not so bad you can play to it... a "slice" (bark) is uncontrollable and needs to be fixed.

Gotta give the air somewhere to go. It isn't gonna get past the intake valve until it opens... so you have to let the pressure off somewhere. It IS very hard on your charger.

Pay $4-600 for a BOV or pay $900-2K for a new charger every so often.

What ever suits you man.:)

I got a BD bov on my truck as well. I was having turbo bark problems and this fixed them instantly. Plus it sounds cool.

I installed a 200 dollar Tial BOV on my charge tube and oppose it using drive pressure. I can get you pics, source for supply, and steps to get it done. Just ask me if you need help with it. Cheapest and most functional I found, and it works great!:) I did it cause my turbo barked bad after loading a hot tune and pushing 35+ pounds boost. :D

On a stock charger? that doesn't make any sense sounds like it was your tuning.

Yes, a stock VVT. Barking was because of the hot tuning, otherwise I would not be anywhere above 26PSI, as almost everyone knows what the factory turbo does with a stock tune.:D

hmm... mine never barked with a 500 tune only when I did my first and last burnout and let of really quick but im sure the BOV will help the longevity

I hear ya, but like everyone states "not all trucks are the same". Maybe just coincidence, but I can say this turbo is nuts when you tune it just right. I have alot of freinds that need reassurance that it is in fact still the stock VVT in my truck. They just can't believe it can perform like that especially when they have the same turbo and hate it. But now I can rest assured knowing I will not destroy the turbo. I like to play hard and I will do what I can to support my engine performance and longevity.

What exactly does the barking affect? More shaft play? Worn out edges of compressor wheel?

Barking is caused by the turbo compressor being stopped/slowing against turbine drive pressure when charge air escapes back out the intake because the same volume can no longer enter the engine. It occurs under hard acceleration when you abrutley let out the accelerator which cuts fuel to the engine and you are still producing "heat". This "bark" noise can be heard the best out the tail pipe. This noise is the result of air deflection in the turbo due to air going in a direction of least resistance on the charge side which is fighting the drive pressure in the opposite direction on the exhaust side. This will damage the turbo in various ways over time and longevity of the turbo will depend solely upon the manufacturers quality and craftsmanship. Hope this helps:)

it can snap the shaft in the turbo if its severe enough.... extreme torque is twisting on the shaft when it barks.

i barked the hx35 on my 12v dodge daily and when it would lock up in 4th it would bark until you backed out of it and it never seemed to bother the turbo one bit.... but there again i could have replaced it for 250$ not $1600 or w/e for an htt

the only time my ihi has barked was trying to pull a truck out of the snow in low range, let off fast enough that my truck stalled and it barked the turbo when it stalled.

Mine barks when it locks the torque converter in 5th gear haha.

I made a totally new tune the last few days. Loaded it today and it runs better than the old tune. Way less timing, quite a bit less fuel. Think I got a max of 2300 pulse width and timing at 2000 rpm and 45mm3 is about 5 degrees, max timing is 23 degrees.

I'll try and work on the tuning over the next few days. The turbo spools nicely and makes good boost, wraps my 30psi gauge fast!!! I'll buy a 60psi unit soon.

I will most likely buy the BD unit... I'll look into the DIY setup, but after changing head gaskets with the motor in the truck, putting ont he new turbo, changing a bunch of suspension/steering and swapping 8 shocks out, I've about had enough of rigging stuff up. It would be nice to buy a unit that isntalls straight forward and easy.

Anyone got a link to the duramax BD unit? I looked on the site, I didn't see one for the dmax?

As posted eraly on...

BD will sell you this BOV all day for about $600, go buy the Dodge one from JEGS for $260 less and install it on your truck. Same TPS signal, directions for the DMAX install refer you back to the Dodge install.... Dodgie workie on 5 volties as well...

SAV THE MONEY WHILE YOU CAN.
