Lowering torsion bars

When I pulled last year, I didn't have any issues pulling without touching the torsion bars. I was thinking about dropping them all the way this year and went to take alook. The bolts have about 1/2" before the bar will be bottomed. The thing is, with the bars where they are, the control arms are already making contact with the bump stops, and the CVs are level, if not sloped down towards the diff a little. With the control arms contacting the stops, can the front end really lower enough to make messing with the bars worthwhile?

depends on the stops you have. The factory ones are quite soft and will compress quite a bit. the yello z-71 ones not so much.

My truck with the keys fully lowered resulted in level CV's. suprising to hear you're are beyond that with still 1/2 of bolt to take out...

yup, that 4k of engine/trans weight you have up front will smash those bumpstops right down.

I don't pull but I am getting into racing and was wondering the samething. with my truck at stock height it is sitting on the new bumpers I just installed but my shafts are not quite level...just a little lower by the hubs.

did you install originals or the yellow ones? I had to trim down my yellows to the size of the factory ones to get them to perform the way I wanted. Even with them the same size as factory they are far stronger and IMHO help decently with weight transfer on the launch.

I installed the yellow ones but didn't trim them. Didn't know I needed to. Rides better than with the old torn up oem's.

You don't have to trim them, just depends on how low you want to go. Myself running drop keys am pretty low and had to trim them down to the size of the stockers to get my ride height back to where I needed it. If you want to get lower and their holding up the show you'll have to trim them. Its easy to do with a bench grinder but does make quite a mess.

I've always pulled level with no issues. Last season I got an idea to pull the stops and make it neg as possible. My thought was it would have a level cv angle once the weight hit, plus keep some extra weight on the front for a little longer. The CV shattered before I could move the sled 2'. It's the only time I've had a suspension issue.

I'm a racer and not a puller but my experiance is this..

at level it launched quite well I lowered it for grins and it hooked even bettter and more smoothly. so now I run it as low as possible,

I did snap one CV but it was an aftermarket one and it was the first night at the track with it and this was back when my CV's were still level. Went and bough a cheapo reman OEM and haven't had trouble since

Hmm.... I was thinking along the same lines as you. Maybe I'll leave it where it is... Hopefully I won't break anything, but if I do, I'll fix it :).

The thing you have to consider is whether or not you are hanging weight. I think Russ is, and the front end won't raise nearly as quickly as it would if you aren't.

So what your saying is if your hanging weight you want all the weight on the truck and the CVs level then ?

No, I'm saying the point Russ was making may not be as valid if you aren't hanging weight, but that is assuming Russ was hanging weight.

Well, I decided to leave them alone. We'll see what happens. If I break a CV, I have the tools with me to remove it.
