So few months back I was discussing an issue I was having with my truck while towing (there is a thread on here somewhere). Well we came up with the idea the converter wasn't right.
So yesterday I made the haul to mikes to pull my precision ML in favor of the ML-G. Mike explained this was a very tight converter compared to what I had and coupled like an SOB. But it would probably fix my towing issue. I said, I'm game for a tight converter. I blow through the ML too easily. I was also getting the new springs installed.
Well while I was there, mike had sal tear the trans down for inspection anyhow. It's been 2.5 years since I was last there and about 31k miles. Boy was it a good thing I was swapping converters now. Internal filter was plugged up solid from the converter clutch coming apart. This in turn hurt my c1-c3s from my heavy right foot. So those got replaced. My internal harness was leaking as well and was replaced. I also knife edged a big plate with splines on the inner circle (not sure what it's called) and mike says that due to my truck weight lol. I would bet the converter clutch dieing is partly due to 2300rpm difference between engine input speed and TC output speed and then the tcm commanding lock up with the new tcm tune. That can't be good on it lol.
So in all, she basically got a full refresh and new converter. The first drive was f-ing amazing. I could not believe how well that converter coupled. Took half the throttle input I used before to get the truck to move or accelerate and WOT was just awesome. The rpms moved right with the speedo and lock up is damn near instant now. I use to get a little delay before lock up but now she locks up as soon as I go WOT like stock. I would have never known it was locking up late until I drove with this new converter. She knocks the tires loose way easier than before.
The shifts with the new springs are nuts. They are so smooth. It feels just like a 100% stock truck. The little lull between shifts is gone in both up and down shifts. The little bit of flair I got from driving easy to wot is gone and shifts are just cleaner. Not to metion it learns FAST now!
Over all, I'm in love with this truck again. I can not believe the difference in coupling of this converter. It flat out makes the truck scream. Thanks again mike for the day of bsing and keeping me rolling down the road. It's always a pleasure to be at your shop.
