I lost my keys and my wallet today. The dealer only gave me one key when I bought the truck and I never had another one made. I had to call my girlfriend to come pick me up and I had to leave my truck at work. I hve another remote door opener so I can get in just cant start it. My question is would GM have my key on record and be able to cut me a new one?

dont know what the general pricing is by you but if the dealer is charging more than $20 go to a locksmith. they can do the same thing and probably for less.

the trucks have pass lock not vats. and if you give the vin to the locksmith they can get the code then make the key. my fathers shop charges about $16 for this if you come the shop.

yes but my point was how does a locksmith get a key code without tearing apart a cylinder? As far as I know, dealers are the only entities supplied with factory key codes.

When my '99 1/2 ton was still under warranty, I locked my keys in the truck accidentally at a gas station. Called the 800-usa-chev (think that is/was the number) and they had a local locksmith at the gas station within 20 minutes, as soon as he had verified the VIN, he called GM and they gave him the code to cut a key on a cutter mounted in his truck on the spot. He opened the door with the key, and then verified my ID (which was locked in the truck til that point), handed over the keys and said, 'have a nice night'. Was free due to being under warranty (or maybe because it was in the first year still, not sure which).

If your good all you need a is a blank key a pair of vise grips and a metal file and about 40 mins of time and you can make one from scratch. And no there are key code books out there but you need to be lic lock smith to get them. they also make wht are called tryuout keys wich are a set of keys for every year car or truck just takes a while to find the right one. I used to do this for a living but for fedral , state instalations. and the ocasioanal 2 am guy tht lost there keys :D

actually for our trucks the door locks are so sloppy that if you take a key for a different truck you could jiggle the key to open the door. doesnt always work but the odds are fairly good
