whats the deal with the 2 piece cam gear on the lmm? it has a spring type ring in between the 2 gears. what is the correct way this goes back on?

stick a screwdriver or something through it and "pry" so the two halves have the teeth lining up.
Honestly, I find it annoying. When building engines (if its an LBZ/LMM), I just replace the stupid two-piece cam gear with the normal cam gear from an 01-05 dmax.

ok thanks man...thats what i did it just seems a little loose in there ill see if i cant grab another tooth and get some tension on it.
You have to tension it enough to line up the 8x1.25 threaded hole and put a bolt in it to hold the tension till you get it back on the engine. Its more than just a couple teeth of tension to line up those holes.

Not sure, but I think it's to reduce noise. It takes the backlash out of the gears. It might improve emissions control by keeping the cam timing more fixed. Another thought is it might improve the cam pin life by reducing impact loading.
Not sure if it was a bad idea, but we left the thin piece off my gear and haven't had any trouble for the last 8k or so. I didn't notice any difference in noise
