I have gotten a ton of info off of this site and finally started to tear into it. It is a budget build, so not everything is perfectly matched but this is the just of it.

Balanced and keyed rotating assembly

Align hone with ARP main studs

Brian Crower Rods

Mahle race cast pistons

Mahle High performance bearings throughout

New oil pump

L5P oil cooler

Pressure checked heads with Empire valve springs

ARP head bolts and rocket arm bolts

DDP 45% over injectors

Dual stock pumps

S484 billet wheel over a homemade LLY charger with billet wheel and power stroke turbine and high flow vanes.

I’m missing a lot of stuff I’m sure. I will try to post pictures as it comes together, the truck will also be getting rust repair and paint.

You can post pics on tap-a-talk. Do you have the parts already for this build? Someone is selling a built motor in the garage section.

Yes I do, I started assembly this week, it will be slow going, but thought I’d try to post pictures along the way with all the help I have gotten from this site.

Do you think shimming the oil pump for higher pressure will help durability?

I could not find too much on this topic, or what people are using to shim the pumps, therefore I did not shim my pump. I definately think it would help, I also see a lot about enlarging the piston cooling nozzles. My build will mostly be a weekend truck that I also pick the kids up from school in, it’s more of a build because I have always wanted to have compounds and I wanted to be more reliable than compounds on completely stock internals. I still contemplate doing a small shim in the pump though.

Shimming the pump results in higher warm oil pressure and less volume bypassed by the oil pump. There are two pressure regualtors in our system, one in the pump itself which is an internal relief and one in the front cover to limit system pressure. Shimming the pump is not a bad idea but the unknown is how much to shim.

As for piston cooling nozzles, I wouldn't enlarge them unless you're changing to a Melling or LML pump. The melling pump has the same gear dimensions as a 01-10 pump but is already shimmed AND has a steel housing vs aluminum resulting in it maintaining its tolerances better than a GM pump, the downside of the Melling is their quality control isn't great. Another option is going to an LML pump. I am going with a LML pump machined to fit an early front cover/front gear set as they are ~11% more capacity than a 01-10 pump and are 1/3 the price. I also will be going to the LML piston cooling nozzles.

Did you open the oil clearance up on the crankshaft?

Yes, I basically had it machined for stock crankshaft bearings and used the Mahle HX bearings so I am sitting right at .0025 clearance, I know some guys get a little more clearance than this, but I don’t have the funds to turn the crankshaft and retreat it.

I would do a Melling pump if it were mine. I have one sitting on the shelf for when I do a freshen up/ck up on the 05’. Quality looks just fine to me.

Your hot oil pressure is going to be m the low side.

A little more progress, it’s been slow going with a few other projects going on, mine seems to always get put on the back burner.

What did you end up with for piston ring gaps ? Did you file fit the rings ?

Top rings fell at .016-.018 and the second rings fell at .018-.020, I did have to select and choose to get the rings in the appropriate holes, but I saw mixed feedback on filing these rings. From what the guy at Mahle said they are not file to fit.

I have not posted anything in a while, but things are coming along, I fired up the motor for the first time last week.

Working on widening the “wings” on the 2018 GMC bumper so that it looks more like a factory fit, I will try to post a video of it running if I get a chance.
