so my truck started throwing up coolant out of the overflow today. pretty sure its a HG. just wondering if you guys think its worth fixing with 220k on it and not to mention it had a hard life before i got it as a construction truck. I've figured up atleast $1200 in arp studs/hg kit, then all the little stuff that need to be done at the same time such as thermostats ect... I paid $8,500 for it in jan. 09 with 155k on it and have done roughly 5k in upgrades so its not like I've got that much in it. So what yall think put up the cash to fix it or try to sell it as is?

You have another bad LLY head gasket, they all do it eventually. Their really no different from the lb7 and it's injector issue. You just have to deal with it, just fix it right the first time with grade c gaskets and arp 625's it isn't gonna be an issue again. I know it's frustrating but it seems like you got a killer deal on it anyway and it woud cost a lot more to replace it than fix it...

this is true may just have to bite the bullet and pay a good mechanic to replace them. is there a way to pressure the coolant system and determine it is a bad hg for sure?

It's not a hard job to do yourself. Just keep track of everything you take off, bag and mark bolts, tape connectors in similar colors etc. Machining can be anywhere from a couple hundred for just a tank, pressure test and hone to 500+ if you need new guides, seals etc.

On an LLY, pressure in the cooling system is a pretty good indicator. Usually you'll see the coolant start turning gray or black too. Check your oil for coolant....not always the case but some trucks will bleed coolant into the crankcase or oil passages.

oil looks good, but the coolant tank is definately building a lot of pressure i can see it bubbling up with the cap off

if a shop does it you'll be around 3-4k to fix. just do regular studs and grade c gaskets mill the heads and do a egr delete while your there make it better all around and test your injectors imo at that milage might be a good idea...

also i have had people drive on bad gaskets for a year and not have issues i dont recommend it but sometimes thats what people have to do

Exergy would be good to deal with. I wouldn't waste money for testing unless I was oversizing and balancing them. You can do the heads yourself for around 16-1700.00. If you do take your time and bag and label everything. Shops are usually close to 4 k to do it. Do a complete valve job. Don't just mill the heads.

When i did mine i didnt have injectors tested, I also didnt have heads milled or a valve job done.. Do i reccomend everyone do this , no. I had to get truck back up and running as its my only vehicle and it was a friday/weekend job so no shop was open. I havent had one problem with the motor whatsoever. If you cant do the work yourself your going to pay a pretty good amount of $ for someone to do it, as said around 4k probally more..
