im getting a crew cab lly or lbz I would like the pros and cons of the both and since I wanna go with a zf6 tranny witch would be the most ethical motor to go with these motors since I cant find a crew cab lly zf6 and id have to do a swap with the lbz tranny is easy to find but any ideas on what set up I hate automatic!

Their both great, any duramax engine is great. Problem wise, the lly can have head gasket issues due to the variable vane turbo, and ive heard a couple times of lbz's melting pistons, but both of those issues dont seem to happen too much. The lbz is faster, but both are great. The 06 lly is pretty much the same as the lbz other than the tuning

Heh. Wouldn't you like to know
Personally, I love my LLY! Ive run the thing into the ground and she keeps on putting out! Bought mine with a little over 180K miles on her and she is now about to push 330K and is still running like a top. She tows 26K regularly and at 300K got the power turned up and is putting 530hp down to the rear and daily drives and tows on that same tune. Just do your mouthpiece mod and blockerplate or egr delete, Gut the cat and you're golden. Never had a overheating problem. They do get warm due to the undersized cooling system. but a simple fix... just slow down. If you're towing, you shouldn't be in a hurry in the first place.

Good Luck! Both choices are good!

Im pretty sure the zf6 will, but im not 100% on that. Considering some dmax's come stock with the zf6, I wouldnt see why it wouldnt just bolt up.

What?

Lly's don't have head gasket issues due to the vvt turbo. It is the gasket design that made them have issues. They changed the design in the 06+ trucks...that's why you rarely see lbz+ trucks with head gasket failures.

Lbz's don't particularly melt pistons either. Any engine can melt a piston. Lbz pistons are prone to cracking under high horsepower due to there design. They have a bushing for the wrist pin, the bushing takes away piston strength. Lb7's and Lly's don't have the bushing.

If you want a zf6 then sure.

In my opinion Lly's are better because they have external injectors and the "good" pistons. I personally wouldn't ever want a zf6 behind a duramax. But if your building the motor then it doesn't really matter what engine you get. You can swap a zf6 into any truck with the right parts.

Did the lbz's not have external injectors?

I'm comparing an lly to an lb7 when I saw external injectors and I'm comparing an lly to an lbz when I say better pistons (stock for stock). Lly+ trucks all have external injectors.

Electronics are much better on a lbz. If you're rebuilding the motor then why keep the problematic lly wirinng, injectorss are better on lbz. Block is better. I k ow the zf6 ispossible behind the lbz, lbz has a much better cooling system too, better water pump better cp3, no retarded FICM. Better y bridge and runners.......
