Lly/lb7 rebuild

So my lly cracked a piston I'm assuming. (Haven't pulled out or apart) but it blew the oil gill cap off the engine when it went. So I bought a lb7 engine to use for the short block. Unknown miles just told the cp3 was bad so the guy parked it. Pulled heads and the cylinders look good. Just curious as to opinion on wether I should go ahead and strip it down and ring it and put bearings in? Was thinking a new oil pump and l5p oil cooler regardless. It will be getting a 10mm or 12mm pump, 100% injectors and a s369sxe on top. So what's the opinion of everyone?

Thanks

I'd Strip it down, put new bearings and rings in it.. around me you can get the block hot-tanked for ~100.00

FWIW generally stock pistons/rods don't last long at the fuel/air level you plan on running.

I have the stuff bought to build a motor. Balanced stock crank, lbz rods delipped lb7 pistons fluid damper and bd flex plate. With a new stock cam. Would I be better off just doing that and not trying to rering this motor? Just use the block and build it with these parts?

Also main studs? Necessary or am I still too low hp ability to need them

What the goal? Get the truck up and running quickly? Or do you have time for it to be done for building the engine?

Truck has been down since Thanksgiving of 22. More than anything I wanted to just throw this lower end in it and get it running so I had another truck to rely on and drive to haul kids. But it's been this long wouldn't hurt to take a little longer i guess.

If your gonna build it use the crank and pistons, throw a set of the Callie's rods in. They are really hard to bet at 1100

Whats the power range that needs main studs?

There isn’t one. Use to be though main studs would help with cap walk and crank walk (or a girdle). I know of guys running over 1000hp on stock main bolts. Dowling every main cap with stock bolts is more effective than studs alone imho. BUT for consistency sake and not having to worry about reusing a tty bolt, guys will swap to studs. Sometimes the cost is hardly more as well.

Lots of ways to skin a cat in these engines but no hp figure for stock main bolts.

Anymore, billet caps, girdle and main studs are used to add block rigidity beyond just the crank area when pushing over 1500hp. At that point, you are at flirting limits of the stock block and need all you can

Oil cooler debate? Go as new as 24? Or is there one that is a better replacement?

Water pump? Welded merchant or can I run a standard part store or gm pump? Would like to put this stuff in there then leave it for a few years.

Plan to do the van thermostat housing since I want to run twins with a 475 that I have on the shelf.

And I seen a post about the oil pump. Melling has a new pump out but it was about 50/50 on who liked it vs who said it wasn't necessary.

Dropped a block at machine shop this morning so hoping to get moving forward here soon.

Not sure if the 24/25 oil coolers changed so stay ‘20+. And keep an eye out for @Bdsankey oil cooler kit.
Get the DHD modified to fit lb7/lly Lbz water pump.

2020 is what I'd run, I do not belive they are different on 2024 but I know the PN I always order from my dealer works great. I am working on an oil cooler kit that uses a sandwich plate. My kit is going to be aimed at the guys who either do not want to swap the cooler on the engine or the guys who want even more oil cooling that maybe say tow heavily in hot climates.

DHD pump. They use the LBZ/LMM/LML pump with a modified LBZ/LMM cover to fit the LLY water neck.

If I throw a set of aftermarket rods in do I need to send this rotating assembly back off to be rebalanced?

buy once, cry once. You don't want to put that thing back in after all of this work and it's junk
