Found a fuel leak a couple days ago and its losing a lot of fuel. From what I can see its coming out from under the holdown on the #1 injector?? (passenger side front). Park the truck and it'll leave a nice 12" diameter puddle within 5 minutes. Block is coated as is the underside of the truck and back window and tailgate. Drivers side is dry.

Checked the balance rates and all seem to fall within spec. If that's the #1 hole that's leaking, then those balance rates were ~+.50 ..... Holes 2,3 and 6 were all showing around +/- 2.0 in park, rest were less than that.

Tried tightening the hold down, nothing left to tighten. Got about 3* of turn in tightening the high pressure line on the injector, didn't wanna crank it too hard. Doesn't look to be coming out of there anyway, seems to be coming out from under the injector.

Not the return line, its dry as a bone.

Anyone had this problem before?? O ring got pushed, cracked body, what else could cause this?? Gonna pull it out tomorrow, just curious if anyone else had this happen and what caused it. Thanks

I had a fuel leak kinda like that before. I thought it was the return line blew off the injector or at the little plastic fittings turned out it was the water in fuel sensor came loose and blowing fuel all over block and under the truck. Truck was smoking like I blew it up.

Wish it was that easy. WIF sensor is dry. I can see it dribbling out from under the holddown as soon as I get done driving.

Just finished reading a few threads on DP that had Eric Merchant posting tsb's for LLY injector bodies cracking. Same symptoms this is having.

Is there any chance the O ring got dislodged or cut?? and if so, would fuel still come out or does the injector body have to crack to allow it to do that??

The o ring seals off dirt more then anything the Cooper seals the injector and fuel in the hole so the body could be cracked but if you have any tuning orcwork done to truck good luck on Gm replacing it. It might cost more going thru them then just getting one and doing it your self.

if its raw fuel coming from under the holddown and not from the return i would say the body is cracked... i have had a copper washer fail and it the entire injector was coked into the injector bore and i broke a large screw driver trying to pry it out.....

^^^^^ Sounds like a cracked body.. This is a picture of a piece of carbon that the dealer left under a copper during a warranty injector swap, it took 4 hours to get that SOB out.

Ah shit! Was there evidence on the head/vlv cover of that kind of coking or was it not visible till you got the injector out??

Just bought new O ring and coppers, now seeing those pics, I don't wanna pull it in case I f$^% the injector up getting it out. :(

if you are spilling raw fuel i am betting that the copper washer is ok and the body is cracked still.

Got it out, can't see any sign of cracked body, jacked copper or O ring. Is it possible these things can leak between the different parts of the injector body??

Looks like some sort of stain on the side of it, no coking though. All the mess is on top of the valve cover, very little down in the hole.

Are you sure it wasn't the line? I pried the crap out of that injector, penetrating oil, bent the hold down prying on it. Finally put the fuel line back on & used a smaller pry bar on the line to work the injector back & forth. Put the tips on & reinstalled injectors. Fired the truck up no leaks. Got on it hard & could smell diesel, pulled over and the left side of the engine was wet. Went back home & looked for the leak, couldn't find it. Had to put a tech 2 on & crank the rail pressure at idle to find the leak. It was my friendly stuck injector. I was positive I messed it up prying on it but it turned out the line just needed to be tightened more, it was tight but I was able to get a little more not much and it quit leaking.

Do you have a place that can test it for you? If not put it back in & check the line over real good for cracks. Make sure that sucker is tight.

Thats the kicker. Only way I can see it being the high pressure line is if it was on the back side where the valve cover really hides that nut on the high pressure line. It may have then run down the backside of the injector, under the hold down and out onto the block.

Seems odd it would just start leaking after 90k miles though. Gonna put it back in in the morning and hope for the best. Replaced o ring and copper, see if that can make it stop. I hope.

Thanks for the help.

Oh ya, make sure the tip is torqued on & isn't loose. 50 ft lbs. & a 15 mm. You can use the injector hold down in a vise, just hold some pressure against it while torquing or it will try pop out of the hold down.

Just did that. Tightened everything I could. Cross my fingers, gonna put it together in the morning and check it. Thanks for the help :thumb:

Alright good luck! Know anybody with a tech 2 thats the only way I could find mine, 20,000 psi at idle!

I was just flogging mine around the block, then jump out and run around the passenger side and look for fuel... :D

Can't EFI ramp up rail pressure too??

make sure that the plastic return 't' is not leaking as well.

First thing I checked, it was nice and dry. Coming from somewhere behind it.

Just soak it in penetrating oil and pry on the injector hold down

Did exactly that, nothing much holding it in, since it popped out with hardly any effort. Easier to use the hold down to pry on than trying to get a screwdriver under the injector in that tight space. Thx

I don't know if EFI live can do that??? I haven't had much time to play with it. The tech 2 was easy to get my hands on (buddy is the service supervisor at the gm dealer ).
