I have an 07 2500hd with an issue that I just can't figure out. It only acts up when your towing or giving it some "gas". it will have a power surge right before it goes to shift and after it shifts it will blow black smoke out the exhaust. I was thinking in the direction of a vane sensor but most people I have talked to said that will throw a code. The truck has no codes stored or anything. Have put new air filter, fuel filter, and air cleaner in with no change. And I also forgot to mention it has this odd whining sound as well I don't think it is the turbo because you can hear that spool as well. Don't know if it's all related or not

Boost leak is my bet... Mine did the same thing the snap ring managed to come loose and the hard plastic peice that connects the intercooler cold side to right before the intake heater I could see oil residue around it from the pcv so I knew there was a boost leak... I can get pictures if you want and like you said it would only do it under harder acceleration or while towing and I never got under boost codes and she would flat out roll coal lol

thanks for the replies! i attempted to make a boost leak tester out of 4 in pvc, a valve stem, and a air gauge. couldn't get it to build any pressure? do i have that big of a leak or do i need to plug the exhaust? also would a boost leak cause a whining noise? ill try and take a video of smoke and noise this week.

My guess would be you have a substantially large leak in a boot, or a hole in a boost tube. You do not need to plug your exhaust.

i didn't think you had too, but wouldn't that big of a hole cause almost constant smoke? ill try to test it again tonight

I made this one, plumb an air hose to it, set the regulator on the air compressor to 30psi, plug her in, found mine leaking at the Y-bridge.
