0087 no fire
hey guys, new member but avid reader here, ill try to keep this descript short as i can here

06 lly/lbz (vin 2) developed fuel knock and cyl miss about 220 miles from home
hit local carquest replaced ff and added seafoam to tank, drove home, no change no codes that i remember. got home put in 1 qt bg244 and topped tank (24 gal), drove 25 miles,no change, shut off for 3-4 hrs started back up ok, no change in idle, drove 15 miles , threw 0087 and limped once under hard accel, reset with edge evo on the fly cleared the limp, only marginal improvement in run and idle quality, parked over night.
started ok next morn, rough idle still at startup, drove another 15 miles , limped repeatedly on 0087's even with next to no load on engine, altho the idle upon returning home did seem to have cleared up, sounded smooth . shut truck off , went to take to get scan thrown on it approx 2 hrs later would not start, even with copious amts of wd40 sprayed into turbo inlet. Changed ff and housing with dealership unit (brand new everything, wif sensor, filter, plug, ect) primes good but no fire. had mechanic come scan w tech2, tests ran indicated poss frps failure (checked actual vs desired w/ & w/out sensor plugged in) chaged frps to the tune of $550 (ouch!), got everything replaced last night, after much priming and cranking found frp pips on edge evo, with key on engine dead and frps plugged in, desired reads 7.4 (assuming MPa) and actual only reads 0.1, will build to 0.8 while cranking but returns to static 0.1. With frps disconnected at 2nd pigtail from sensor desired does not change but actual at static reads 29 (assuming 4205 psi?) will not fire with frps disconnected? any ideas where to go from here?

forgot to mention, edge has been set to stock tune since initial malfunction, had been runnin on 70 hp tune for approx 20,000 miles, truck has 181000 miles on it , no lift pump and no additive in the last 30000 mi (as long as ive had it) wasnt aware then of what i am now..

ok, so update number 1, went back out after soakin the batt a bit, scrolled through the pid's on the edge and found batt volts and engine rpm, enabled both so display while starting is now 1. afrp :: 2. dfrp :: 3. engine rpm :: 4. batt volts. so i dug around the engine a lil bit, was able to get a long skinny flatblade and disconnect the fpr wiring plug, then i reconnected the frps harness. warmed the glow plugs and rolled it over (approx 5 attempts on this setup total, repriming the low press side between each attempt during the obligatory 60 sec starter cool down period) the display read as follows with very little deviation between attempts.... 1. start at 0.1 reaching 0.9-1.0 at the end of each starter cycle, ::: 2 . 7.4 with a small fluctuation up to 8.0 briefly occasionally , ::: 3. 180 avg rpm till it would trail off towards end of cycle down to approx 150/160 , ::: 4. 12.5 steadily dropping to sub 11 v when it would shut down. idk if i know any more than before but i do know this much now? lol

any ideas? where to go next? pull the glow plugs? check the/a return line? kinda not sure which direction to go here before assuming the pump, fpr, frpr valve, inj? anybody familiar with the bg244? is it known to cause hard system part failure?

sounds like an injector took a dump. If you can't get it running, then you need to cap each injector off one at a time and attempt to start it. Likely it will start.

BG Products are a very quality line of products. Been using there fluids, additives for the better part of thirteen years' trouble free.

You logged the right values for startup. Everything looks normal, except actual rail pressure, which is way too low. Engine RPM and battery voltage look great when cranking.

It sounds like one of your injectors is returning too much fuel, so you can't build rail pressure. Like onebaddmaxx said, you can cap off one injector at a time and see if it starts. If not, your CP3 might have died suddenly. You don't see any diesel in the valley, do you?

alright guys, thats what im talkin bout! lol, i like the disable one inj at a time theory, thats something that isnt TOO difficult or expensive and outside the box of where i was thinking, i like! haha. think thatll be the next step in my diag process. as far as the edge, i did return it to a stock tune as soon as the initial symptoms showed up, drove approx 300 miles total like that, but since shes been dead in the water i did try starting it several times with the tuner unplugged, also when we had the tech 2 on it, i hear where your goin there, and agree to rule it out but im not thinkin its the cause of my probs here, thanx tho bro, ya never know till ya try it lol

yeah im not thinkin the bg is "bad" for my truck, i just didnt know if the additive i put in could poss cause my no start issue if say it "broke" a buncha junk loose in the system and poss caused a blockage or failure downstream? just a thought? and as far as diesel in the valley, i did not see any or any evidence of any but i havnt pulled the a/c comp or alt yet either, my local tech told me if the porcelain cup plug did give out id have a valley full of fuel so i have been mindful of that, thank god it doesnt appear to be the case, dont think i could swing an entire fuel system here! lol

one more thing, does anybody have the answer to whether the edge is readin kpsi or MPa? either way the actual is way low but the diff in my readings may indicate different issues?

ok guys, went out and for the hell of it this morning pumped the primer up hard again, purged the vaccume test port, pumped up again and tried to start her. Initially no change from before, crank speed was a little higher than previous, (had it on 2a trickle charge overnight) so cranking speed was around 210 rpm or so, then about 8 - 9 seconds in the engine crank speed picked up prolly around 30% more, and whala she fired! choked and stumbled for a few secs then idled up and this is where the videos come in, i let it run for a good 15 mns before videoing so it was up to temp. the entire time this video is being shot the fpr is unplugged, what do ya think?

also after shooting these vids, and letting it run for over an hour in the garage, switched pid from batt volts to fuel temp, fuel was runnin around 100-110 deg f, i goosed it a cpl times watchin afrp , it kept wanting to run to a higher rpm than i feel it shouldve for the input from the acc pedal, and it wouldnt idle down immediately after releasing acc pedal, it would stay at a higher idle momentarily then eventually come back to around 680 rpm.i took it up to about 2500 rpm in park, and the fuel knock returned, i checked balance rates again after that and they were all approx where they were previously, #1 actually improving to 5.4 in gear and the rest being +/- 3.5 or less. So i decided to risk it and see if it would start again if i shut it off. It didnt lol, same as before, not creating enough rail press to fire, wont even hit 1 kpsi now, so i tried plugging fpr back in and priming and pumping and purging and all the things ive done before and still no fire again. Ive determined my next step is to get an air dog 150 installed and go from there (maybe itll point out where the air is coming from?)since i shut it off it seems to need more priming by hand than was the case previously, so idk but my guess is its sucking air from somewhere, when it was running i got it up to 21000 psi in park so im not thinking fprv or cp3, what ya think?
