I have a 2007 lbz duramax. 120k miles. Truck has stock intake, egr, exhaust, etc. No tuning. I have a problem with extremely loud turbo whistle. It wasn't like this when I got the truck. It has gotten progressively worse overtime. It normally sounds like extremely loud turbo whistle but if I pull something that puts it in a load the noise cuts in and out rapidly. Sound like Morse Code in a way. Please help me figure this out, makes the truck annoying to drive and especially pull anything. Thanks in advance

Almost sounds like the variable geometry turbo's vanes are sticking. Any lack of power or black smoke while driving? Black smoke would let you know of a possible boost leak. Any codes?

When my vane sensor went out it whistled like hell but it didn't have any power as maxes vane position but limits rail pressure.
Could be the vane controller if it's fluttering like you say, but hooking it to a tech 2 may help diagnose and save you buying sensors for nothing

I never thought about the vanes sticking but it's fairly common on a turbo that's not worked hard or worked often.

Is the truck lacking power or giving extra black smoke on acceleration?

Is there a way to verify the vane position sensor issue or controller? And no loss of power. Smokes some if you floorboard it. Also at night if you are at a red light sometimes it hazes in headlights. Has zero codes.

Can someone point me in the best way to test for leaks?

Go to YouTube there's tons of videos on how to make a tool I took a piece of pipe and reduced it down and bought a air fitting like goes in a car wheel and threaded it the pipe then put it in the boot coming out of the turbo and put my air compressor on 35 psi fill it up like a tire should hear something leaking. My experience is a whistle is turbo to motor boost leak. The up pipe bellows are bad to crack but ones I've heard are more of a roaring not a whistle

Sorry for the late update. But I think I found my issue. I noticed my egr has a lot soot and oil around one of the gaskets. Not the gasket where the exhaust riser bolts on either. My question is would tuning the truck and blocking the egr keep the egr from seeing pressure or would I need to do a full egr delete or remove the egr and replace the leaking gasket and run it stock(which would obviously work)?

Depending on where your located, I would just delete it. sounds like it's leaking where the valve meets the cold side charge pipe? if that's the case the egr blocker plate is not going to resolve your issue. Have you pressure tested it like we suggested?
