It would be like any used truck or vehicle for sale. With the exception of the injectors. Even although they have been changed the concession is are they still reliable? Seems like not from what I'm reading lately

Other than that like I said any used vehicle depending on the previous owner and maintenance it's about that time to nickel dime you. Steering, suspension and misc mechanical items like mentioned water pump alternator hoses belt etc etc.

IMO if I was looking for a used Duramax I'd shy away from a LB7 unless the price was really good. Or unless you were to consider a extended warranty. The replacement injector(s) , unless PROVEN, to be reliable really concerns me. Unless you can do it yourself it's a expensive gamble IMO! Don't you think?

Ya I know but I have NOT heard anything MORE about them! Plus I never received any answers to my questions in that thread. Not to mention those injectors must be on some terrorist hit list of must have for making bombs or something to take this long getting through customs. I'm starting to believe that it was is bullshit.

I have had an lb7 and my current lly. Are the injectors reliable ? Well if people knew which injectors were bad they wouldnt buy them to begin with. People still drive and still want LB7 because its a damn good truck. Like all duramax motors it has good and bad.

I know of SEVERAL LLYs that have blown headgaskets, stock as sin and turned up, but that didnt effect me buying one. Should the lbz pistons steer you away from buying an lbz to build ? Leaky transmission lines on the LMM has also been common, along with the emissions junk on the LMM, by the time you spend money on an exhaust and tuner and delete or blocker plate, you could have done more to any previous year duramax.

And yes, as a mechanic, im comfortable doing a set of injectors on a pick up, if i can work on big rigs, dump trucks, drillin trucks ect with various motors in them. Is it an expensive gamble, yes i do agree with you. As i said about the LMM, by the time you spend money on injectors for an LB7 you could do a considerable amount in smaller things to an LLY,LBZ.

I said i wanted opinions, both good and bad. Thanks for your response.

I know what your saying in some ways all brands do and can have inherited problems from year to year. Some problems are corrected from previous years and in some cases new problem areas occur. This is the case with ALL brands not just the trucks that we choose to purchase.

All brands will have design defects its unavoidable, none are perfect.

BUT,

Perhaps in a LB7 since the issue is with injectors it is expensive ,forget about the cost for a moment, if the procedure in a LB7 for changing them out was as simple as changing a set of spark plugs then maybe its a risk taken lighter but it's not. And then you factor in the WORST part is even if you visit the swap of injectors it isn't a GUARANTEE the problem goes away! That is IMO the worst issue at hand.

So if my or anyones injectors shit the bed and you were told put this set in and you wont have to worry about it again like many brand factory defects I would be a very happy camper but that is not the case. You could easily incur the cost of labor and parts only to drive a few thousand miles and have to re-visit the problem. That is what sucks plain and simple! Been there done that but luckily under warranty!

Please don't get me wrong here. I luv my Duramax and the brand it sits in. Problem is this 'bad' about this sucks. Everything else about the truck, mechanical ,appearance, quality etc etc IMO is the best out there. I just wish there was a one time fix a fix that would not have to be re-visited then believe me I'd suck it up and call it a day!

This problem would not shy me away from buying another Duramax but it would shy me away from buying a LB7 again. Thats just my opinion! I honestly believe that IF I had to pay out of pocket for the two sets if injector replacement as much as it would suck I would say that I would no longer own this truck. Truth be told.

Absolutely, very good points as well. It is quite the task to change the injectors by the time you take everything off to get to the valve covers to take upper and lowers off and then the LB7 has the injector cups that the LLY does not have ect ect. Also, i have seen people who love the LB7 bodystyle, pull the motor and just put an LLY in place of it after the third set of injectors.

I suppose it comes down to personal preference. Im not dead set on an LB7, but it fits my price range at the moment, since i already have an LLY, and i do like the bodystyle, the 03 was always my favorite. But i do agree with what you are saying, about that if it had to be done once after the problem was detected and it was fixed, that it would be a different story. I still havent had any problems with my LLY headgaskets, but i dont drive it that hard, and i take care of my stuff, well try too. Im not exactly looking foward to that task, but at least it is a one time fix :thumb:

Thanks for your opinions Mackin

I bought one that had 394k on it. Ice had to replace onjectorswater pump, tie rods and steering parts but it now has 331k on it and runs as well as any. Mileage on one of these isn't as much a concern as how well it was maintained and serviced. I bought my 02 for 4750 and with everything including new tires I have about 9k in it. I wouldn't very scared to drive it anywhere in the country. As far as injectors goes all diesels have injectors that go out. Some are just a little garret to work on than others.
