took my 2004 lb7 to gm for ticking noise they removed transmission thought noise was coming from cracked flex plate! "not" they set valve lash on #5,#7 cylinder noise would go away, they were not sure what the problem was... i took my truck back home and removed pass side head found lifter guide hold down retainer bolt(6m) broke then lifter guides floated off lifters, lifters rotated in bore ruined cam, knurled bottom of lifters so much that i couldnt pull lifters out had to pull drivers side head pull lifters out (used small vise grip to hold #5,#7 lifters from dropping down) remove camshaft feed mig wire(.030) down thru lifter oil port then fish out to front of engine thru camshaft bore, then remove vise grip drop lifters thru bottom fish out! wow what a job here is a few pics will add more! dang need 10 posts or more to post pics! anyways this is another issue that may arise for lb7 owners

push rod wear!

i wasnt sure what i was going to find when i pulled the passenger side head off, then next thing i know i am moving the rad outta the way to make room to get the camshaft out!!! lol actually wasnt that bad worst part was haulin the heads "out/in" without damage and makin sure the head landed on the guide pins! did you see the pic of the push rod the wear from the retainer guide? wow shoulda recorded the sound, cause it sure didnt sound that bad, be interesting if more of these failures show up! i couldnt find anything similar and i searched for a long time! hope this helps others! here is the pic of that push rod, check out the flat spot where it goes thru the guide!

eh, I dont think so, really. All of the duramax's 2001-2012+ use the same valvetrain design/parts (ok so they went to hardened rollers in 04 but thats really the only change), and this is the first time ive ever heard of this problem....probably just a fluke occurance/freak accident. :(

I'm curious what your truck sounded like. I have a ticking noise that isn't noticeable until you press the throttle. I set the idle at 1500 rpm and went around listing to see where it was the loudest. Sounds loudest at the bottom of the cylinder head at the #2 and #7 cylinders. People mentioned that it could be a bad injector but there is never any smoke out of the exhaust, and doesn't run rough at all. The ticking is always there, cold or warm.
