LB7: Lift Pump Decision / FPR

Hey guys, I've been lurking in the back absorbing all this great knowledge. I'm at the point now where I'm trying to decide how to go about installing a lift pump on my cali LB7.

Objectives are first-cost, second-not limit the fuel filter to a specific brand like fass or airdog...if I can help it.

So, my thought was to get a lift pump from Kennedy and then use a Cat (2 micron) fuel filter in the same place that the stock fuel filter goes. I like that you may be able to find these at Napa or some other places.

Anything wrong with doing it that way versus just buying fass/airdog?

I run twin Kennedy pumps and a cat filter. Kennedy recommends dual pumps when over 450hp IIRC.

Thanks for your response. I didn't think I needed twin for near stock cali lb7. Just wanted to alleviate extra work that the CP3 and injectors might be going through.

Side thought...what about running lift pumps by ford or dodge?...or scratch that idea? -just curious.

Glad to see someone has had success running the cat filter.

Fass lift pump filters can be crossed to wix, Baldwin, etc. You can actually fit a cat 1r0749 fuel filter and equivelant in a water separator on them.

I run a dual kennedy and make over 620hp..i put a cat filter on with the dual pumps and it works great 0 issues even at 0 degrees in the winter. i will make you a deal on it if you're interested. Im going to fuelabs pumps.

I can get you the part number for the cat water separator too if you like. I run cat filters on my FASS. They last a long time and they're pretty cheap.

I fun dual kennedy pumps as well. I didn't like Fass or Air dog in how they hung below the frame and had to mess with cutting a hole in the tank; this was a number of years ago.

I added one of his mega filters to my system & I've had no issues. Been up in Canada for 2 years and at -40 no gelling.

I mounted my fass inboard the frame. Pushed the water seperator knob through the bottom making a massive fuel leak. Because it hung below the frame and That's because I tried driving over a log. Now I run a short Baldwin filter there cheap to at my local peterbuilt. Like 12 bucks I want to say

I like kennedy myself, but really your only doing it for piece of mind on a stock truck. There are lots of high mileage trucks out there on factory CP3s.

The filter again is piece of mind really and if I where you I would make my own secondary filter setup like the Nicktane. I wouldn't want to lose the water separator of the stock filter.

Im running dual air dog 200's they don't have below the frame they are tucked up high.

On a stock truck you wouldn't necessarily need one but the benefits are nice, easier priming, 2 filters to help save cp3 and injectors, no gelling in the winter. And mostly I like how quiet the Kennedys are compared to any other pumps

You're right, I wouldn't necessarily need one, but my 3rd set of injectors are smoking at idle again (replaced in 2011) and would like to prevent myself from having to replace this set.

I'm understanding that all the rest of the truck manufactures put the pumps on theirs, but GM uses a vacuum rather than a pump..which works...sort of... Anyway, just trying to make this thing perform like it's supposed to and let the cp3/fpr/injectors work less hard at moving the fuel.

On the other side I don't know how beneficial (probably more harm than good) it would be to have two pumps with out having a cp3 that can handle it and maybe other parts(?) -just thinking. Perhaps in the future...after I get efi live, finish the whole egr delete I'll move that direction of getting the two pumps or the fancy big pump.

Correct me if I'm wrong in my thinking...

Doesn't matter how many pumps you have, as long as it is regulated below 10psi or it will surge and give you fits. If I were keeping it stock trans with a decent tune, run a single Kennedy pump pushing through a 2 micron fuel filter. Either with an adapter on the stock filter head (what I have on mine) or an inline setup from nicktane or Kennedy.

A single Kennedy pump would be so small you could put it almost anywhere, and they run so quiet you can't hear it even with the truck off while priming the filters. :thumb:

That's the direction I'm leaning. Single pump with a cat 2micron filter (w/adapter kit on stock filter head).

I don't know how important the water separator is since my wires on my plug are some how gone and no codes are thrown. The cat won't have a water separator it doesn't look like...

I had a side question for you. Since you're in the extreme (IMO) cold, do you have the intake heater still installed on the LB7?

I'm in the south where it gets "cold" (teens to 30's)...sometimes...

Reason I ask, is I'm about to do some hunting in about probably -2 weather here coming up. I have mine unplugged with electrical tape around it in case I want to reinstall it.

Nope, no intake heater. I didn't notice any difference between working & not working.
When it was -40 I would just cycle the glow plugs twice, just b/c it made me feel better, haha.

I would like the part #'s for the cat filters if you dont mind. I hadnt been happy with the wix alternatives for the Fass150. would like to try cat filters before I go back to buying Fass filters again

The stock separator will still get the water out you just need to drain it on on occasion or you can always get a new plug.

Cat has separator but they are only 10 micron filtration. Which is fine as long as you run the stock filter still.
